Rob mentioned the Klaus Nomi fillum... '"The Nomi-song" - documenting the life of the late great Klaus Nomi ...the clips of Nomi singing back-up for Bowie on Saturday Night Live are priceless... I came across this... " Featuring the music of Wire, the Marbles, Pylon the Mumps, Chi Pig and, of course, David Bowie not to mention numerous live Klaus Nomi performances..." So Robert, my man, what's this Wire content consist of? Short clips of "Public Place" and "Pieta". michael, nyc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2005 10:41:37 EDT From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Re: Nomi/Wire songs In a message dated 6/17/05 3:31:14 AM Central Daylight Time, owner-idealcopy-digest@smoe.org writes: > So Robert, my man, what's this Wire content consist of? > > cheers > > A actually, i think there were two Wire tracks....one was "Pieta" and i think the other one was "In a Public Place" ..... What do you make of Bobby G comprehensively overlooking African acts for the abovementioned events ? Hmm. I take it you mean Mr Geldof and not the other Bobby G! Anyway, Bob's become a bit of an easy target I think. Initially, I wondered why Bob wasn't try to make more money than the #1.50 from texting, till I saw him being interviewed on J Ross. It would appear that this isn't about money - Geldof said he didn't want to stage a Live Aid 2, as Live Aid belongs to the past and is more potent as a memory. This is about awareness. The interview, which I must admit actually moved me, was on screened on the same day that Gordon Brown announced that he believed there was a strong possibility that G8 would wipe out 'Third World' debt. As a result of one summit. Now that must be worth celebrating - hence G8 (or commiserating, but still raising awareness if it fails). Now I think most of the bands that will be playing are pap and wouldn't it be great if there were some African acts, etc, on the bill, though I thought it a bit rich for people on another list I read, where (the odd reggae thread apart), people spend hours writing about long haired white blokes - to then start preaching about there not being enough black artists on the bill. The fact is, like it or not, it's the likes of U2 and Coldplay that put bums on seats. As for the wiping out of debt, well I'm too cynical to think that this is just the start and the whole world is suddenly gonna be a better place, but it's an amazing one-off gesture if nothing else. And if it does come off - it's people like Geldof and Bono who should be thanked, whatever you think of them or their records. Somebody's doing something about something! And it's not as if G8 can set music back like Live Aid did, is it. The stuff in the charts is pretty shit as it is ; ) K. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2005 14:00:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT Live 8 from what I understand in an interview with BOB and others, several African bands and some european (Black) bands were contacted but gave the excuse/reason that they were going to be busy at the time of the events: this doesn't 'quite' hold water with me as there must be trillions of 'unknown' black musicians that would have been willing, and able to commit. As for the absence of African bands, I'm sure I might be castigated as an ignoramus here, but off the top of my head, apart from Youssou N'Dour, Fela Kuti and Baba Mal, I can't think of any other african acts myself, and how many are there that have to any degree 'crossed over' into the conciousness of your average Coldsailor mass-market fan ? If you want to have your gig attended, what can you do.....? I mean, I like that style of african music that's all high-register double stopped guitar, and a kinda soca beat:-[ I believe it's known as 'hi-life', and it never fails to get my feet twitchin',]- BUT I couldn't name any of it's proponents. Like I say, it's my ignorance perhaps, but I'm betting I'm not alone, there.......... I know he's played safe, but if he wants media coverage and BIG attendances, at least in the UK..............................
