Recently finished Bolan: The Rise & Fall..., Mark Paytress update of his early 90's 20th Century Boy biog. Undoubtedly the best Bolan biog, though it's maybe a bit too hard on him for the rabid fan like myself ; ) Also just read a great kids book - The Giggler Treatment by the excellent Roddy Doyle. It's about these little creatures (The Gigglers) who get their own back on the adults who are nasty to their kids by making them step in dog poo. I'm maybe not selling it awfully well here, but that is what it's about - and a lot more, too! I'd definitely recommend it those of you with kids - my 6yr old loved it. > Music: GITHEAD - Headgit ep Need to get the new album! IAN HUNTER - s/t 30th anniversary edition. Includes the so-crass-it's-classic line "Genocidal tendencies are silly in the extreme". Talk about understatement! Saw him recently...Wasn't blown away, but he was in good voice. However, this was a world where, say, Metal Box has not yet been made. As much as we think we would all like to return to our youth, this is not ultimately a world in which I would want to live. Full review on below link if anyones interested! http://www.evilsponge.org/concert/HunterIan__24May05.htm ITAI - Now A regular feature on my playlist of late. It's just so darn listenable! Latterday John Lennon fans would like it. Gentle acoustic strumming - could be the soundtrack to my summer this year. Review on below link... http://www.evilsponge.org/albums/Itai__Now.htm STEREOLAB - Oscillons From The Anti-Sun Lots of classic Lab moments gathered on a cheapo boxset. 3cd's and a dvd all for #13.99. And a suitably ridiculous title to boot! Fluorescences or however they spell it, was one of my fave records of the 90's. As for the DVD - in includes The Word performance of French Disko again straight afterwards. It's what got me into them in the first place. Superb. TARWATER - The Needle Is Travelling Didn't set my world on fire first play but there was enough to suggest it was gonna grow on me. And it has.I'm not for a moment suggesting it's better than Silur or ..Atoms. , but I already like this a lot. Cheers S/H. T.REX - Born To Boogie (soundtrack) SAUL WILLIAMS - Saul Williams It's sort of rap, but not quite though Williams sounds not unlike the guy out of The Ruthess Rap Assassins on Justice. Dark, powerful, intense. SMOG - Supper Looking forward to hearing their newie. V/A - Beyond Punk Recent-ish freebie with Mojo, with the likes of Non-Alignment Pact and Kidney Bingos, though it was Siouxsie's Mirage that I've been enjoying most lately, maybe cos I hadn't heard it in so long. BILL WITHERS - + Justments Bought off ebay last week. Just as good as I remembered, with the opening track being particularly good. 45's BLACK BASQUE - Times A Factor I've seen this Manchester band a couple of times this past month, and been very impressed both times. Repetitive, thrashy, shouty. The overall result reminded me of a forgotten late 80's band, The Sperm Wails, who once released a truly superb 7" single, entitled The Golden Age of the Casual, before disappearing into the sunset. Or, putting it another way, imagine a slimmed-down Tad Doyle fronting The Fall, which is no bad thing in my book. Picked up their 7" single the other night. Doesn't really capture them, but I like it. Full review of 1st gig on below link... http://www.evilsponge.org/concert/BlackBasque__6May05.htm THE KILLS - Love Is A Deserter Not been a massive fan of these, but this a great single. A less poppy Raveonettes. THE NIGHTINGALES - Devil in the Detail Still the best single of the year for me. By a mile... SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES - Christine Hadn't heard this in a long time. Surprised how good it's sounding. And going back a few weeks when I was in the midst of an enormous Billy phase... ASSOCIATES - Breakfast Which I honestly think is one of the greatest singles ever. DVD Born To Boogie Of course! TV The Desperate Housewives Really missing this already. My fave programme of the year. Have I Got News For You Am I alone in thinking that this is finally starting to appear a bit on the tired side. Later Thought the Doves were pretty good - and Becks gimmicky dinner table playing was worth a view.
