Enlighten me, Mark. What was the souths contibution to all this? Surely, once you've taken out Wire, Lydon, etc who came from the punk movement itself, you're left with little more than The Sound (one of my all-time fave bands) and the all the Blitz kids. Whereas the cities you name (and Scotland) provided virtually all of the bands that I think of when Ihear the term 'post-punk'. Right, top three Bunuel films off the top of my head: The Exterminating Angel - one of the great high concept premises (haut bourgeois party goers find themselves unable to leave the party for unexplained reasons and descend into degradation) and social satire to boot. Simon of the Desert - a short film about Simon Stylites, a medieval holy man, who climbs a column to be nearer to God and is tempted by the devil, who finally takes him to a disco. Simultaneously funny, heretical and spiritual. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie - a bunch of French bourgeois dinner party goers try unsuccessfully to have dinner, their efforts thwarted by increasingly surreal episodes. Well, Belle de jour was a contender along with The Phantom of Liberty, Los Olvidados, Un Chien Andalou.. Top director, Bunuel, who has been somewhat forgotten in recent years. The best ever director of dream sequences I reckon - there's one in Los Olvidados which is just perfectly judged.
