It's contextual. They definitely play to standards that they set for themselves. - --- I viewed (several times), digested and understood 24HPP. The only bit of that I see as totally relevant to NO's performances and releases of late is that they, towards the end, were lazy bastards who were more interested in getting shit-faced in Ibiza than making a record. Since then, the record label has changed, but the band still seems lazy and tireduninterested in doing anything different, instead preferring to be stuck in a happy little jangly pop rut. As for the live performance and that "singing", I realise NO never was the best live act in the world, but the performance on Ross's show was nothing short of toe-cringingly, flat-out jaw-droppingly dire. It was even worse that Oasis's effort the previous weekand seeing as how much I can stand Oasis, that comment is quite something coming from me! And yes, it was rather shite, wasn't it - although I'm struggling to see why that came as any big surprise. Was it really any worse than that mid-80's in-the-studio OGWT performance that resulted in Barney attacking the mic? The problem as I see it is, when you've got a singer who really can't sing but unlike, say, Mark E Smith TRIES, then of course there's goinna be a problem with live performances. The Blue Monday TOTP performance is another case in point, though it somehow manages to be classic and shit at the same time! And the main reason that the JR performance was so poor was again down to Barney as far as I'm concerned (though the Scissor Sister's vocals were little better). Am I alone in thinking that Barney has developed the complexion of an alcie? And that Morris and Hooky looked less than pleased with things at the end? K. In the normal run of things, I wouldn't dream of bigging up a 'local' band, but I really *do* think that this Lancaster-based trio *might* just do something in the future. I've caught them twice, and they've delivered both times, and I think they may well appeal to some IC'ers.. They inhabit broadly similar territory to the Pixies, and as well as Black Frank's tribe, they list "Sonic Youth & graffiti artists(!)" as influences, as well as (less comprehensibly) AC/DC, but don't let *that* sway you:- I don't hear any of the Aussie cock-rockers in there. In bass-player Brigit Colton's own words they like to keep it "short, sharp and nasty". If you're in the area, check'em out [and tell them Derek from FLM told you it was worth showing up;-)] (Don't be late though, as their set-lengh tends to be sub-35 mins, but it's quality, not quantity, folks.) They got featured on Zane Lowe's Radio one show in the "Fresh Meat" segment recently, for 'up'n'comers': up against two signed bands, their self-produced single "Feminine Side" won the subsequent phone poll.......... from their own web-site www.loki@the-adventures-of-loki.org :- ".............Wednesday 18th May at The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town Road, London. I guess I *was* the lucky one then, having read some of the comments on here: I'd set my vid to record it, but, as occasionally happens when I use the PDC setting, some glitch prevented it from recording properly (I got a whole 50-odd seconds of the titles!) > And yes, it was rather shite, wasn't it - although I'm struggling to see why >that came as any big surprise............. The Blue Monday TOTP performance is another >case in point, though it somehow manages to be classic and shit at the same >time! Oh really? I *must* get you to point out the 'classic' element of it to me sometime:- I can certainly see the other facet ! ;-) That whole TOTP performance was utter tripe, and shite though they undoubtedly were, it wasn't just the vocals, it was everything. Hooky's bass sounded horribly tinny, K/B stabs overwhelming and all sounded somewhat out-of-tune IIRC. Also, considering how much of it was sequencer-driven, it was horribly ramshackle. >...... main reason that the JR performance was so poor was again down to >........Barney as far as I'm concerned............ > Am I alone in thinking that Barney has developed the complexion of an alcie? No, you're not. He's got the classic bloat, and a nose gaining in bulbosity. He's also starting to get that 'leathery' look that someone with a knackered liver seems to get. Watch out next for signs of facial capilliaries bursting and leaving that 'road-map' look on his mug, and *then* we'll know for sure he's rather too keen on the 'sauce'............ >And that Morris and Hooky looked less than pleased with things at the end? I recall seeing NO on a South Bank show or something, some years ago, when Barney admitted he was having trouble, both with writing lyrics AND singing them, and that he'd got so dispirited by this that he'd tried hypnotherapy to try and cure him of the twin maladies of writers block and tunelessness.....perhaps it's time to repeat the dose, B..... dw - --------------------------------- Yahoo!
