I watched the performance slack-jawed. Although New Order has done plenty of poor live performances in the past, that one on Ross's show was one of the very worst I have ever seen. Sure, the mix was a bit off, but Sumner's "singing" (and, yes, I think I really do have to use scare quotes) was embarrassing, as was his desire to keep yelling "woo!" at very regular intervals. And then there was the music... I've always been a bit suspicious of New Order. While Joy Division, in my opinion, rarely put a foot wrong, New Order's output has always been somewhat variable, but the band has done plenty of really excellent pop songs (leading them to be one of those bands where a singles collection - at least of the pre 1990s stuff - is almost essential, but where many of the albums can perhaps be skipped). It seems that in the late 1980s/early 1990s they became lazy, as evidenced by Republic, which lacked much of a spark. Everything since then has, for me, seen the band become progressively duller and greyer. People on this list complain about Moby being boring, but at least a few of his songs have a little "oomph". New Order is now less daring and exciting than The Lightning Seeds, and that really is saying something. The man is a powerhouse. The most energised and passionate player I've seen in a long time. The set was a performance of 'The Secondman's Middle Stand', composed in response to Watt's experience of peritonitis. A pretty intense, though highly entertaining piece (about 50 minutes worth). One Minutemen song was played in the encore (Corona), and then the *piece de resistance* for me was an incredible version of The Pop Group's 'We Are Time'. Here was a rare example of a cover actually *improving* on the original, hard and all as it is to imagine with a song like that. Quite simply, it put The Pop Group in the shade. Inspiring. Watt's a big John Coltrane fan, and sports a picture of him on his "thud staff". He insists that A Love Supreme is played on the PA before his set. Respect. Here's my photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/55867717@N00/sets/335080/ And now for something COMPLETELY different... ex-Coil man Thighpaulsandra played here recently. He was a hoot. Highly entertaing and very camp. Definitley a touch of the Sun Ra with his get up.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/55867717@N00/sets/334868/ Fergus __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Well...I thought they were excellent when I saw them in Jan. The Manchester gig was one of the first of the reformed gigs and - having not seen them before - I did wonder if the other IC-ers who had seen them 1st time round were gonna say "Bloody hell, Keith. Get a grip. They're nowhere near as good as they used to be". But the reaction seemed to be really positive all round. They GO4 might be 20-odd years older, but they played with a real intensity. They played the 'hits', but this wasn't cabaret - it was a great gig. I think you'll really regret it if you don't go, Paul. It was well worth my hour drive to Manchester. The man is a powerhouse. > The most energised and passionate player I've seen in > a long time. I saw Mike a couple of times. First with fIREHOSE (remember them?) - great show. Mike sold T-Shirts at the edge of the stage afterwards. fIREHOSE was touring for a CD they'd released called "Live Totem Pole EP" - five covers and two originals. One of the covers was the Wire track "Mannequin". I can't remember if they played that track that night or not - I don't think they did. (Odd side note - my band "afterthought..." actually covered fIREHOSE's cover of Mannequin. I just couldn't manage to sing it like Colin, and as a band, we couldn't come to grips with Wire's minimalist style. But - fIREHOSE we could sort of emulate - my guitar playing always had more in common with American "flannel" bands like R.E.M. and fIREHOSE than my British heroes. Maybe because I'd learned folk guitar before I switched to electric? I know we recorded a performance of this song at one of our few live gigs. If I ever find anything after my big move, I'll try to put a copy of it up somewhere for you to have a listen.) Next time was opening for Primus. This was with Mike's full touring band - double drummers al la Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd (sp?) - and they were touring for Mike's "Ball Hog or Tug Boat" album. But, apparently, they had also finished their contribution for the Wire "Whore" tribute album, because midway thru the setlist, Mike launched into "The 15th". Caught me completely off-guard - the Wire tribute CD wasn't out yet. Great version - very fun with the double drummers. Cheers, Paul P.S. Now playing - Buffalo Daughter "Pshychic A Go-Go". From their as yet unreleased in the U.S. album "Pshychic". Why isn't this band isn't more popular? Better yet - why don't they have a decent record label deal in the U.S.? It's totally beyond me.... Good news, though, you can get it in the U.K. for #6.97 from Amazon.co.uk - 4 copies left. I guess it's out on V2 in Europe. Just skip "Chihuahua punk" (unless you have 4 minutes to kill) and the rest of the album is great. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 May 2005 23:46:04 +0200 From: Bart van Damme Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: new order/jonathan ross > I think Mr Hook has more than a touch of Herbert von Karajan about him - wild > hair, imperious manner... ...dead looking Bart ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #129 *******************************
