I only knew him as a cello player - at least that's what he played on The Ex albums. Those interested can download Cora's I-Wanna-Be-Your-Dog-like chords of "Hidegen fzjnak a szelek" (from the "Scrabbling at the Lock" album) from The Ex website: http://www.theex.nl/audio.htm Looked it up and read he started out as a drummer and guitar player! "Cora made his musical debut as a drummer on local tv's "Dandy Doodle Show." In the mid-seventies he worked as house-guitarist in a Washington, DC jazz club." Already a remarkably accomplished live act with the album songs beefed up for live consumption. The stage presence is immediate and substantial - lots of instrument swapping and moving around and the songs just sound great. Lots of off-mike singing by band members too, which was oddly also something noticeable at VdGG when David Jackson sang along whenever he didnt have a sax or two clamped to his mouth - it gives the impression of overflowing enthusiasm and comes recommended. The audience lapped them up - it was full of people who clearly had an intimate knowledge of the album and the band. There was crowd surfing by Win the singer, which is not something you see often these days, and there was enjoyable stage banter. Is there anything this band can't do right? I suspect, at present the answer is no despite the fact that they didnt play Naove Melody tonight. Brit listers can check 'em out on this week's Later. Funeral is certainly the debut album of the year at present and all the live reports are very encouraging. For me "Funeral" is the debut of the millenium and "Laika" one of the best singles ever! The EP indeed has some great tunes as well. I'm sad as hell I can't make it to their Dutch gigs. > Think Talking Heads, meets Dexys, meets early Mercury Rev, meets > Godspeed You Black Emporer with a sense of humour. I only got my copy a couple of months ago, and as is often the way with the BN, it initially washed all over me without sinking in. But just as I was thinking that maybe it wasn't going - that maybe it just wasn't very good - it's all started to make sense.<< At first it just sounded like Hats lite - but as you say, it grows... >>I love the opening Days Of Our Lives, I Would Never has a nice I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For spiritual feel,<< A major drawback for me - just too close to the U2 track... >> She Saw The World is probably as rousing as the BN are ever gonna get, and I find Stay Close, the lengthy closing track, genuinely moving. So, another winner in my book. Anyone else?<< It's a hell of a trick they pull off - totally machine music that sounds incredibly human. And it's not just Paul Buchana's voice that achieves this. I guess it's not Hats lite - but it's Hats grown old (though not old hat!) But I've saved them up! Here's one (don't worry, they will be so old they'll seem new): Last July 9th Mark Bursa wrote "Eno's '70s albums are one of the few 'overt' influences I can hear on CM/154, for sure . . ." Mark, that's an interesting observation. They each have such strong identities for me I can't compare them. I'd like to hear more-would you explain?<< This could break records as the slowest online conversation of all time! I think I was alluding to the general streamlined European-ness of early Eno solo albums - the post-glam ones, not the ambient ones - like Wire, it seems purged of "blues" riffage - I'm talking about obvious stuff like 'Needle in the Camel's Eye' - fairly basic riffage, very streamlined sound, slightly 'mockney' vocals... Of course, if you've all been reading your Simon Reynolds, you'll have discovered a much more striking direct link between Messrs Eno & Newman ;-) Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 May 2005 21:34:32 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Dislexia rules KO >>thanks fergus. you just helped me hit myself in the head for not mentioning the wonderful mr. ted milton and blurt! don't really know about his personal influences/inspiration, but what better description for him than jazz-punk?! ))) God, yeah.. how could I forget BLURT. Only saw them once, in The Africa Centre in Covent Garden in 1985 (they never played Dublin), the same week I saw Neubauten in ULU. Both outrageous gigs. Real watershed moments.<< Never saw "late" Blurt - presume the 85 line-up featured the bloke out of the Photos (improbably!) The original line-up circa 80 was fabulous - Ted, his brother Jake on drums (Jake had been in proggy/fusion type bands and had the tightest snare drum sound I've ever heard) and the fantastic, cadaverous Peter Creese on guitar - who Ted introduced as "Mr Peter Creese - the human loop". Which is as accurate a description as you'd hear. He just played the same riff over and over, unchangingly, throughout most of the songs, while Jake played round him and Ted, er, blurted over the top. Stunning stuff. Saw them play a tiny pub in Birmingham. And the first modern German record that seemed to referecnce directly the German post-punk scene - it sounded like it could have been made in 1982.
