New Albion has some loving notes to start I recommend any and all of Cage's writings As well as recordings of his readings. Unlike many musicians, his words are arguably stronger than his music ^_^ http://www.lcdf.org/indeterminacy/ Is another source. Personal note: A high school friend organized a concert of Cage's works at the Cranbrook Academy one year, in which I made my musical performance debut playing an Arp Odyssey, and a second at Northwestern University the following year which I attended. Subsequently, I bought and read Silence and A Year of Mondays. Several years later, shortly after Cage's death, I received an invitation to the opening of an exhibition of Cage's paintings. I had been in Chicago less than two years and could not imagine how anyone would know of my interest in Cage's work. Nonetheless, my wife and I gussied up in our art opening finest and trekked down to the very exclusive Michigan Avenue gallery. Upon arrival, we immediately realized we were out of our element when the very nice, very attractive lady who greeted us asked for my invitation and called the gallery owner over. The owner told me that he didn't have the address for the David McKenzie he meant to invite, and pulled my from the phone directory. I told him of my surprise at anyone knowing my interest in Cage and history. He replied "Well then, come on in. I am certain Mr. Cage would say it is no accident that you are here!" And he was right. That is exactly what he would have said. (btw, the champagne was excellent, as were the hors d'oeuvres... and the gallery owner was a perfect host. the paintings were watercolor circles which had been painted around stones indeterminately rolled or tossed on paper. Such images provide the wallpaper if the Indeterminacy web site. the tiniest, least expensive of which was priced at 5,000 USD. we were, I think, the only people beside the owner and staff who knew anything of Cage's music) Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2005 08:21:37 +0100 From: "Garry Phillipson" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Oblique Strategies Wow. I have to give all three of these Deluxe Editions near-perfect ten scores. I honestly didn't realize how badly these three albums needed to be remastered until I heard the reissues this week. Seventeen Seconds and Faith, in particular, sound much more spacious and ethereal. Pornography sounds more dense and crushing this time around. Seventeen Seconds (my all-time favorite album) has a much better sound on the short instrumentals that span the album. In the actual songs, Robert Smith's vocals sound much more ghost-like. The sparse minimalist quality of these tracks is enhanced quite astoundingly. As far as bonus tracks go, the Faith reissue has the most bang-for-your-buck, with the long-overdue remaster of "Carnage Visors", the inclusion of "Charlotte Sometimes" and the "Faith" b-side, as well as several incredible demos. The Pornography reissue has a superb bonus disc as well; the demo of "The Hanging Garden" is amazing. Seventeen Seconds includes the Cult Hero side project songs and some live tracks/demos...the live version of "A Forest" falls a bit short; I've heard much better live versions of this song from the same era. Overall, though, I can't recommend these reissues enough. Yeah, there's nothing like hearing vastly improved versions of these three albums that I've literally grown up with. Jason P.S. Good to see all of you again. I read the digest emails here daily, but haven't posted myself in quite awhile; it's been a few months, I think. Things are going quite well in my neck of the woods. At the beginning of February, I decided to get myself in better physical shape by going to the gym six days a week and eating healthier. As of this morning, I've lost 65 pounds. I'm still a big guy, but not dangerously overweight like I was at the beginning of the year. I can definitely feel the difference...it'll make standing up at Music Midtown for the Pixies show much more bearable, at least. Have a good one and I'll try to be active here more often. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2005 14:10:34 +0100 From: "Tear Alistair (ST)" Subject: FW: [idealcopy] Cure reissues - -----Original Message----- From: Jason Rogers //Pornography sounds more dense and crushing this time around. I always really loved the tracks on the B side of the cassette version of Concert & Curiosity, so I'm hoping they all end up on these reissues. I think the fact that my ears were ringing the afternoon after a Siouxsie and the Banshees gig on 9.25.79 (Cardiff, Sophia Gardens - info courtesy of http://www.untiedundone.com) made me aware of the fragility of my ears. Mind you, if the band doesn't play loudly then you have to put up with some clown moaning to his mates about the performance/price of tickets/weather. I've tried rubberised plugs, which are claimed to have a 20db noise reduction and look similar to Fernando's headphones, but they are rubbish compared the cheap foam ones from Boots. As an added benefit they can block out birdsong at 5am on a Sunday morning... Seems worthwhile for gigs, I am going to order some. cheers! - -fernando On Apr 27, 2005, at 8:16 AM, Clements, Bruno - BUP wrote: > There's barely a gig I'd venture to without earplugs these days. > > I think the fact that my ears were ringing the afternoon after a > Siouxsie > and the Banshees gig on 9.25.79 (Cardiff, Sophia Gardens - info > courtesy of > http://www.untiedundone.com) made me aware of the fragility of my ears. > > Mind you, if the band doesn't play loudly then you have to put up with > some > clown moaning to his mates about the performance/price of > tickets/weather. > > I've tried rubberised plugs, which are claimed to have a 20db noise > reduction and look similar to Fernando's headphones, but they are > rubbish > compared the cheap foam ones from Boots. Had them, loved them, have lost them somewhere. ARGH. Didn't work for me. Too uncomfortable. I didn't really find them to be better sounding than the foam ones. I have to wear earplugs at shows or my ears will hurt for days. I wear the softest foam ones I can find. The amount of attenuation doesn't seem to matter much. The plugs with the least attenuation still have enough to keep my ears from hurting. I have thought about getting custom fitted audiologist plugs, but they are pretty expensive. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 07:43:16 +0100 From: "Clements, Bruno - BUP" Subject: RE: [Maybe spam] Re: [idealcopy] VDGG 6th May >>Are you auditioning for Grumpy Old Men, Bruno?<< Being paid to moan?
