Jack - -----Original Message----- From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of David McKenzie Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2005 8:49 PM To: idealcopy@smoe.org Subject: RE: [idealcopy] a tale of two auctions I should have prefaced my email with the statement "This is not my list, nor am I even a frequent contributor" That said, the two things I have seen kill interesting discussion lists are 1. Flame wars 2. Shameless self-promotion ... Funny thing, if you think about it, selling Wire related music for $0.99 USD each is not self promotion at all, but rather it's the fostering of the Wire related projects themselves! ... While not wishing to invoke list killer #1, I would debate how effective reselling Wire related material to a Wire-related list might foster the project. In terms of 'spreading the gospel' you are rather preaching to the choir. And in terms of financial advancement, unless (and I am not suggesting you need do so) some portion of the proceeds were to go to the artists (see below) O ... As Colin Newman said satirically in his 1986 "disco" interview: "Maybe I should get paid for this." In short, I guess my criteria (and as stated above, the opinions stated herein are mine alone) would be that someone posting a unique items such as the mzui keepsake is decidedly of interest, while posting used wire-related material which can be found fairly commonly is of greater interest to the poster than the community at large. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 13:54:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] a tale of two auctions ,etc...... - --- Jack Alberson wrote: >>In the interest of playing Devil's advocate here, what if there are people on this list who don't have much money and want to learn more about Wire? One of the great advantages of the Internet is how it gives us the tools to become a part-time enthusiast of one sort or another. It allows me to be a record store super geek, sort of like Nick Hornby's Rob, Dick, or Barry. I really take the whole process to heart. For me, selling on eBay is all about having fun writing item descriptions, coding HTML, and carefully scanning images. This whole messy eBay business is not about making money. It's a hobby that pays spiritual dividends. I love all of my "real" off-line friends, but to be honest, only one of them digs Wire. Selling on eBay allows me to make contact with new on-line friends that enjoy talking about the same bands I appreciate. I appreciate the comments ya'll made about the availability of Wire product. I try to put up items that are hard to find. For example, the LP autographed by Colin Newman at The Knitting Factory, NYC, 1999: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=306&item=4721146725&r d=1 Colin was so drunken that night after the show! He could not stop staring at my girlfriend's tits! Naughty bugger, I know you're listening, you dog! ;) At least I know he has good taste! The two Immersion 12" EPs have been out of print for years and feature amazing remixes by Claude Young, Mark Gage of Vapourspace, Fred Gianelli (ex-Psychic TV), and Mick Harris (Ex-Napalm Death). A lot of Wire fans I talk to are not aware of Colin Newman's output as Immersion. I know you can find the Githead and Wire CDs in most big cities, but they're damn hard to find where I live. You would have to spend a lot of dough getting them through the mail. Forget about buying from the UK if your an American. A #12.00 UKP full-length CD equals $23.00 USD! That price does not even include packing and post via airmail. Eeeek! Once again David, Jack, and Ari, thanks for writing! Eeeek!<<< Too right. And something like the new Beck CD with bonus DVD and fancy-but-useless box is about 20GBP, full price! Residents albums are also expensive (or just not stocked) in the UK and the Netherlands. I've started buying discs from US eBayers. Discs are not only far cheaper than in the UK but there is such choice on eBay that many US buyers just won't pay over the odds for something that they can be confident of picking up in a few days or weeks time. If I bid quite high, and pay about $5 postage, it's usually cheaper than using Amazon or a High Street shop - and more fun. Even when an eBayer says an item is only for sale within the US a quick email pointing out that sending to the UK will only cost the buyer (ie me) an extra couple of dollars always has them encouraging me to bid! We do have a CD and books shop chain, Fopp, which has expanded from Scotland in to many UK towns where quite a few back issue discs are only 5GBP... They even let you take back discs within a fortnight if you don't like them. However, when one opened in Park Street, Bristol, it did have the effect of shutting down the best second-hand CD store in town. Of course, whether it would have died a death eventually because of downloads, etc, is difficult to say. Fopp certainly seems to be doing brisk business whenever I've been in there. ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
