There are some excellent commercial lists for auction promotion, IDMMART comes to mind, which not only are more appropriate, but more effective, as those subscribers are actuallt looking to buy. I wholeheartedly agree with you, this list, as well as others, should be made free from spam. With that said, I do not believe that a single post containing brief and explicit information pertaining to the list's topic, should be considered spam. My single post contained seven direct links to brand new Wire related items, some of which are quite rare. I would think that giving fans of Wire, Colin Newman, Edvard Graham Lewis, et al., the opportunity to buy rare or hard to find Wire related product, would be to some extent valued, and certainly not be considered as spam. It's not like I am hocking penis enlargements and mortgage discounts. I'm simply a fan of Wire since 1978, who has a few items available for sale: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZelectrowaves Ooops, I did it again. :-) Well, no worries there David, this will be my last eBay post forever. > There are some excellent commercial lists for auction promotion. > IDMMART comes to mind, which not only are more appropriate, > but more effective, as those subscribers are actually looking to > buy. I sincerely appreciate the suggestion. Thanks again David for the constructive and helpful response. _meat_hook_ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Apr 2005 18:00:28 +0100 (BST) From: Monochromatic Man Subject: Re: [idealcopy] a tale of two auctions So what's wrong with a little shameless self promotion? - --- paulus hook wrote: > > ray0graph@ameritech.net [David McKenzie] writes: > > > NO THANKS to p_hook for the auction spam. Heh heh, thanks for the support Mr. Monochromatic Man. Funny thing, if you think about it, selling Wire related music for $0.99 USD each is not self promotion at all, but rather it's the fostering of the Wire related projects themselves! Isn't that the sole purpose of this list anyway? Aren't we in fact here to spread the gospel of Wire related output to each and every member who signs on? Is there any difference between an e-mail stating "look what I know about Wire" versus "look what is for sale by Wire"? As Colin Newman said satirically in his 1986 "disco" interview: "Maybe I should get paid for this." _meat_hook_ >>> ray0graph@ameritech.net [David McKenzie] writes: >>> NO THANKS to p_hook for the auction spam. Funny thing, if you think about it, selling Wire related music for $0.99 USD each is not self promotion at all, but rather it's the fostering of the Wire related projects themselves! ... While not wishing to invoke list killer #1, I would debate how effective reselling Wire related material to a Wire-related list might foster the project. In terms of 'spreading the gospel' you are rather preaching to the choir. And in terms of financial advancement, unless (and I am not suggesting you need do so) some portion of the proceeds were to go to the artists (see below) O ... In short, I guess my criteria (and as stated above, the opinions stated herein are mine alone) would be that someone posting a unique items such as the mzui keepsake is decidedly of interest, while posting used wire-related material which can be found fairly commonly is of greater interest to the poster than the community at large. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #106 *******************************
