Theres lots of "good" stuff but I want to hear some amazing stuff. It annoys me that despite the fact you can do so much with the available software/hardware, Electronica is forming its own narrow set of rules/traditions much like any other form of music and most annoyingly the revivalists seems to be taking over. Aphex Twin for example is currently releasing a string of 12"s which just rehash old Acid House nostalgia. The Konono record shits on anything Aphex has done for about 10 years. There are a few exceptions of course. I like Bitstream, and the Quinoline Yellow CD (on Skam records)..and of course Autechre.... I'm into the new > Autechre record right now (today has mostly been Autechre and Philip Glass, > actually). The new Autechre record is superb and they alone seem to be forging ahead and pushing their machines further and further along and they are still making new structures and logic for music (but not forgetting to bury some rather gorgeous melodies in there...and some great big speaker rattling bass!). Their new CD got 2/10 in the NME who called it 'Unlistenable'....obviously it doesn't sound good when you're hanging out with Pete Doherty and his crack-addled mates ...they'd much rather listen to The Others and the Kaiser Chiefs. > > Reason 3.0 is eating the rest of my life. Rehashing things is fine as long as you have good tunes. I heard Analord 10, and it was... alright. The thing about his best stuff - and I still love the Windowlicker single - is that it had more tune-per-square-beat than almost anything else *along* with the ninja programming. Mind you, I am the parish Ulrich Schnauss rabid fan, so I would say that. What's really depressing is that there's so much cookie-cutter stuff which engages neither intellect nor emotions - and the perception that if something's difficult to listen to it must somehow be clever/good. That doesn't work for me; Boards of Canada are definitely clever and good whilst also being really approachable (the first modern electronic music I got into was "Music Has The Right..." and DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing", really). Autechre and Fennesz or whatever _are_ comparatively harder to get into for most people (though I think that's overstated too - I'll come back to that in a minute), but there is real depth and subtlety to *get* into. It's all the music out there which has nothing but a set of parlour tricks, and not even new ones, that winds me up. > There are a few exceptions of course. I like Bitstream, and the > Quinoline Yellow CD (on Skam records)..and of course Autechre.... Not heard Bitstream or Quinoline Yellow; I'll check them out. > I'm into the new > >Autechre record right now (today has mostly been Autechre and Philip Glass, > >actually). > > The new Autechre record is superb and they alone seem to be forging > ahead and pushing their machines further and further along and they are > still making new structures and logic for music (but not forgetting to > bury some rather gorgeous melodies in there...and some great big speaker > rattling bass!). It's a really subtle record. "Fermium", "LCC" and "Pro Radii" are doing it for me at the moment, but I suspect that'll change with repeated listening. (Incidentally, it works *really* well next to the aforementioned Glass in my playlist at work; going from "Sublimit" into his string quartet, "Company"...) > Their new CD got 2/10 in the NME who called it > 'Unlistenable'....obviously it doesn't sound good when you're hanging > out with Pete Doherty and his crack-addled mates ...they'd much rather > listen to The Others and the Kaiser Chiefs. Really? That's hilarious. Talk about just not getting it. (Culture shock of the week; finding that a friend of mine who I'm training as a radio DJ - who's always been a folkie/indie type (if you forgive her complete set of Tori Amos records) - is getting heavily into electronic music through developing a bit of an obsession with "Draft 7:30". Talk about going in at the deep end...) I don't understand what the NME want any more, really. It's not like there aren't good guitar bands (step forward British Sea Power and accept your laurels) out there, but the Kaiser Chiefs are SO DULL. They're the NuBritpopStereophonics. Oh My God indeed. > >Reason 3.0 is eating the rest of my life. Too much fun. > > Don't get Ableton Live 4 then, you'll never leave the house! Indeed! One of these days I'll spam the list with mp3s, and then you'll all be sorry. - - Andrew ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #105 *******************************
