I didn't see them, preferring to be blinded by Secret Machine's hugely annoying lightshow, but those of my party who did - all of whom were predisposed to have a good time - thought they were awful - pub band level. I'd started the evening with Art Brut who I'd seen about six weeks earlier and didn't rate. How wrong I was. This night they came across like a band with a set to die for and a singer - Eddie Argos (yeah, right) - who was Morrissey-like in the way he inspired audience devotion as he taunted them from the front of the stage, shirt open to the waist (not a pretty sight, really). The songs are witty - 'Formed a Band' is their fine single from last year and now reasonably well known and it's backed up with catchy numbers like 'Moving to LA', 'Modern Art' (which involves the band holding their ear at one point in a Van Gogh gesture) and the best song about impotence since 'Love Lies Limp', whose name escapes me. Then it was off to see Sons and Daughters, a Scottish band who I'd wanted to catch for a while. Lead singer, Adele Bethel, is a genuinely fierce stage presence, staring down the audience from under an impressive quaff, lipstick shining, while Scott Paterson holds a guitar in a patented Franz Ferdinand way and the drummer pounds out the noise of doom. Some catchy songs are delivered. Recommended. Next, KaitO. I hadn't seen them since the Edinburgh Triptych last year and there was rumours that they had a new set which wasn't up to past glories. Wrong again. In a blistering 40 minutes they laid down a set of intense noise and rhythm, almost entirely new material. The ever wonderful Dave Lake has invested in yet more effects pedals, one of which allows him to play the guitar like a percussive instrument. Sweat was running from him by the end as he kept up an almost Riverdance intensity, going from pedal to pedal. The rhythm section of Gemma and Dieter are, if anything, even tighter than before and Nikki continues her effortless star-like yelping. There is still no light and shade in a KaitO set and clearly I don't care. This noise rush is the most exciting and reliable currently available on a regular basis in the live arena. And the new album is to be produced by Grant Showbiz. Can't wait. The reviews of the 1st gig on his tr connection website are AWFUL. So bad in fact that Todd has posted a response. Hmm. Now I haven't actually paid my mate for the tickets yet ; ) Melborne by Todd Rundgren 4/14/2005 No doubt about it, this first show was pretty flawed regarding my performance. I got so involved in the larger picture of the presentation, the pacing and set changes and interstices and such, that I neglected to focus on my own contribution. I paid also for some decisions I had made whose consequences were unknown until showtime. All the other musicians but I opted to use in-ear monitors. I wanted to try using the monitor system that had worked for me during the Liars tour. I didn't really have a piano check, our preshow time being taken up with Joe and Ethel rehearsal and the house piano tuner. No sooner had I started my piano songs when I realized I couldn't hear myself and there was little I could do about it. Shortly into the first song the monitors began to 'explode', the volume suddenly and randomly increasing many-fold for a few notes and then dropping off again. It became impossible for me to get comfortable at the instrument and I became apprehensive about the random blasts of sound from the side of the stage. The end result was me at my sloppiest and least confident, where even the singing cannot redeem the crappy accompaniment. Simple things plagued me through the set, like picks not being taped to mic stand so I wouldn't have to search for them, or guitar cables that weren't secured to keep them from falling out. If I had worried more about my own performance instead of the whole show I would probably have double-checked all these details. There were broken strings late in the set, but broken strings are a fact of stage life. I likely miscalculated the pacing of my own set, which is far shorter than what I'm used to and which doesn't leave much time for redemption after a disastrous piano experience. I don't recall having any particular 'attitude' in my stage demeanor, so I'm not sure how to respond to complaints about the humor or lack thereof. Some people just don't find me amusing, and sometimes I am just not funny. I guess Melborne was one of those times. I do not think it is fair to condemn shows that have not happened yet. The entire crew, myself especially, have learned a lot during the first show and there will be adjustments all around. I'm truly sorry that people were upset by my performance, but everyone must know that I care about the quality of the tours I'm involved in and I am not blase about the audience who make it possible for me to play.
