Well worth a read. Quite a succinct little write-up, IMHO hitting the nail squarely on the head, excepting that I think those who said it are WAY off the beam with "more Pink Floyd than Pink Flag". Are we sure they were listening to 'Flag? I mean, I think there *is* something to the 'Pink Floyd' charge in some of the textures used on "Chairs Missing", such as "Marooned", the intro to "Being Sucked In again" , the languid nature of "Heartbeat", and a couple of other things, but if there's one scintilla of Floyd-isms on 'Pink Flag', it's managed to evade my "intensive electronic scanning"........ So, sceptics "cavilled", did they? I wonder how one does *that*......time to get down with the thesaurus I think....;-) Keith A wrote: Finally got round to getting the Mojo 'Punk' special yesterday.........As for the albums, PF - "angular north London quartet's lean, art punk opus" - is, of course, present. "If brevity is the is the soul of wit, then Wire's debut is punk at it's most perspicacious - delivering 21 tracks in 35 pin-sharp minutes. Erring towards both minimal austerity and miniaturised pop perfection, PF 's release attracted equal parts veneration and bemusement ("more Pink Floyd than Pink Flag", sceptics cavilled). In fact, it's detached, compressed atmospheres, with singer CN's surreal lyrical bent to the fore, represents a uniquely cerebral response to punks year zero. . Instead, Wire proffered arcing, oblique rock songs like Feeling Called Love and Strange......that sounded like hits from a parallel world ruled by Brian Eno......a breadth and rigour unmatched by any tight trousered contemporary. Post punk starts here". Yahoo!
