Afraid of being typecast? My arse. He didn't display any such fears whilst trousering the cash, and to drop his bombshell after just one episode had aired was just crass and insulting to the rest of the cast and crew who'd staked rather a lot on the thing working. In fairness to CE, it was the BBC who dropped the bombshell after a mere one episode. Apparently the Beeb and CE had an agreement that they would not disclose that he was leaving until AFTER the series had finished. But then when asked, the BBC went ahead and announced he was going. According the press, they have apologised to him for doing so. Still it goes someway to explaining his discomfort when Jonathan Ross showed him the CE Dr Who dolls!! > I mean, it wasn't as if the role, and the accompanying 'baggage' (no, not Billie Piper) was an unknown quantity to him. Just another poor 'luvvie' who doubtless feels it's all beneath him, and he should *really* be 'playing the Dane' at Stratford. > Twat. That's unfair, Derek. And not just because of the above. I've never met him myself, but I know people who have and he's supposed to be a nice bloke. And if he wants to leave his job, that's surely up to him. FWIW I rate him highly as an actor. Just not convinced he's a Dr Who. On a happier note, I've just read there's gonna be a 2nd series of The Desperate Housewives, which along with the 2nd series of Shameless, has been my favourite TV of 2005 so far. He _didn't_ drop the bombshell "after just one episode". The BBC only hired him to do one series in the first place, with the _option_ of doing a second one, which he'd never at any point expressed in an interest in doing. I don't know why everyone's being so nasty to Eccleston when he's clearly done nothing wrong (but the BBC has bungled the news, as always). (And, yes, it is a bit surreal to discuss this on the Wire list, but there you go.) If anything, Eccleston should perhaps reconsider when he sees how well the show's doing and how well he's considered to play the part, but the reality is that he was never supposed to do more than 13 episodes anyway. Oh, and the 15 per cent budget cut for the next season means the BBC may not be able to afford him anyway. FWIW, the Casanova bloke was a "fail safe" in case Eccleston said no, and he's apparently already agreed to do the part in such a scenario, so he's the most likely replacement. I'm a little disappointed by all this, because I'm rather enjoying the show and the lead, despite not give a flying monkey about it in the past. I've followed him since his debut in Takin' Over the Asylum (which made Ken Stott a belated star) and he's got that manic edge that the DRs need. And of course Russell T Davies is behind both series. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Apr 2005 00:52:32 +0100 From: "Keith A" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Fw: Christopher Eccleston > (And, yes, it is a bit surreal to discuss this on the > Wire list, but there you go.)
