[Ari Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Fw: Christopher Eccleston At the risk of turning this into a Doctor Who list... There is something about the role of Doctor Who which requires a certain dedication - the understanding that it is a role with a much larger hinterland than the average character and therefore an expectation that you will be required to be associated with the Doctor until the day you die - which Eccleston clearly either never understood or thought he could ignore. He is after all an actor at the top of his game which no-one else who has taken the role could be said to be. But by quitting so soon he's actually made it worse than if he had hung on for a second season as he's now forever typecast as the Doctor who bailed out rather than the Doctor who rejuvenated the series. By announcing it so soon into the season it will also make the rest of the episodes feel somehow posthumous. Which will be a shame as I thought last week's episode was really successful. Thought Eccleston did a pretty good job and his manic grin and his way with a malevolent alien threat had a touch of the Tom Bakers about it and the new series is very 2005 and seems to be something that actually lives up to the hype for once. Don't think he's done himself any favours by quitting so soon...surely he's already typecast as the gruff northerner with 'hidden depths'...hence this regeneration is a gruff, northern Dr Who with hidden depths! Bloody actors eh? Beats working for a living doesn't it? Still, the real star of the show is Russel T Davis who is on board for series 2 so.... And good to hear the theme tune very close to Radiophonic Workshop/Delia Derbyshire original.
