After all, it seems the band's been on auto-pilot since 1991, doing the exact same soft-pop "la la la la la" song "x" times per album, and the latest single is just as boring and lazy as New Order's last. Couldn't recommend it. They stayed at Peter Gabriel's studio in Box, Wiltshire, at the same time as the Libertines were recording there (according to a piece in the Independent). Since I only live 14 miles away this should have warmed me to it. But it didn't. B > 6. Not surprising, it's a real challenge. Never trust a band that dresses all in white. I remember a lot of chanty choruses about would-be positive, hippy stuff - you're really important, don't let anyone tell you what to think, kind of thing. Although the between-songs banter vaguely nodded to the fact that they were being obviously foolish, the music itself managed to remain irony-free, which is some kind of achievement. My pal Smith and I agreed that 'I Went to the Bar I've Seen Them' would be a suitable new monicker, and congrats to Mark who had the wit to do exactly that. I loved Githead. Wasn't sure before the gig whether I was going to enjoy them or Rother/Moebius better, but it was Githead all the way. The music makes me think of 'Not To' era Colin - the kind of engaging repetition of little motifs he was into around then - but with a muscular, driving rhythm section. It should be mentioned that the drummer's hair was both very long, and very grey. And the rest of the band laughed when he took his shirt off. But drumming-wise, he did the business. I thought the live thing worked much better than what I've heard of the recorded Githead. So Bravo and hurrah. I see ATKeith thinks that Scanner looks like Simon Pegg - I'd thought during the concert he looked like (a younger version of) Mark [I'll get my coat] Williams. So certainly a comedian then. And indeed his banter proved it. Rother/Moebius would have done better to come on before Githead - after some proper rock the prospect of watching two chaps fiddle with boxes was never going to be that gripping. I've loved stuff that each has done in the past, and though this was OK, it didn't particularly grab me. I'd hoped that the recent reissue of the Neu! CDs might have pushed Rother to revisit that section of his career, but this was firmly in the Harmonia/Cluster camp, with a couple of Rother's greatest hits at the end. It felt a bit tired to me.
