Even on the Revenge album, "It's Quiet" is an ode to Robert Forster's singing. Around that time he kept telling people how much he liked 16 Lovers Lane. Also surprised that he does not mention 154. In talking to him once, I got the impression that he is/was a fan of Wire and no doubt very familiar with this material... may be the comments from G. Lewis were not welcomed. I suppose the truth is somewhere in the middle... Hooky has no trouble talking about ripping off stuff. cheers! - -fernando On Mar 15, 2005, at 2:14 AM, Keith A wrote: > Hooky picked his fave records in one of the Sundays.... > > 1. I would have thought they were a bit on the fey side for a man with such fine leather strides ; ) Actually, I was surprised to find Berlin wasn't in it. He always used to say that was his fave. K. Jeff Tweedy said they were enjoying themselves and I've no reason to doubt that. Mercury Rev seem to have some enthusiastic supporters - Southampton Guildhall was far from full on Sunday night but they seemed happy enough to have a very vocal group of fans there. Another good mix of material (mainly from Secret Migration, Deserter's Songs...) Theirs is not as varied a sound as Wilco, and they aren't as exciting to watch, but that's no surprise. I thought the music from both bands benefitted from being heard live - much more involving than on the CDs (which there's nothing wrong with). ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Rother - Moebius Saw them last night at QEH. They could've vacuumed the stage and I'd have been happy but IMO, 30% motorik madness, 50% ambient genius, 20% Euro cheese. Shame they didn't speak though. + Githead were fab in a Wire meets Neu! kinda way. The bass player was sensational BTW. My first exposure (I really must do something about getting Headgit) and the songs came across as fully formed and immediately recognisable as a Colin sound - it's a very Colin experience. Other members of the idealcopy posse said they didn't have a drummer last time but they sure had a proper one this time - hair flying and all. Malka laid down a strong bass and Scanner - looking disturbingly like Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead - played so hard he broke a string requiring guitar swapping antics with 'Uncle Colin'. An encouragingly strong performance. Much better certainly than the wonderfully named They Came from the Stars I Saw Them who were a shambolic bunch of irritating extroverts. And quite unlike the Polyphonic Spree (in-joke for attendees). Michael Rother and Dieter Moebius played on a darkened stage in spotlights, with a perfunctory screen behind. No microphones so they had to acknowledge the applause with polite bows of the heads. Which happened rather a lot as this was a superb performance, delivering a range of musical tones from the genuinely Krautrocky to a marvellous western tinged theme which should be adopted as the theme music of Deadwood right now. Rother- looking disturbingly young - spent some time on guitar while Moebius - an Ian Holm look-alike- hunched over his archaic looking kit. Kraftwerk last year played with four laptops and keyboards. These two obviously haven't cleared the garage to the same extent. An exemplary performance and I really hope it was recorded. Only ordered it yesterday! Haven't listened to the cd copy yet, but played the DVD earlier and it captures the Mk3 version in a suitably fine fashion (i.e. they're on good form and it looks really good). Hilites on first play are the opening 99.9, the ever excellent Spent and I loved the version of Strange that opens the encore. It all ends with a very long version of Pink Flag itself, that leaves the song behind and goes to some faraway place. I like the way Robert gets up and leaves. Has he had enough? ; ) I know the Barbie Burning stuff is just with a fixed camera, but I like it. A nice memento. For those who haven't indulged as yet...15 quid for a DVD, CD and a Pink Flag badge.
