Hi everyone, Well, I'm back from my honeymoon. Dana and I went to Hawaii. We had a great time in Waikiki - snorkeling, riding helicopters, going to a luau, etc. Basically, all the things tourists do, plus I got some time to drink Pina Coladas & Lava Flows, and swim in the ocean. Imagine my surprise when I got back home, logged into my computer to check my e-mail, and discovered the news about Bruce and Wire! In retrospect, I can't say I'm too surprised - the lack of new material/Read and Burn 03 was telling - but I'm saddened nonetheless. Of course, I am always excited by any new projects by Bruce, Graham, Colin and Robert, but I have a fondness for Wire too. It's also kinda sad that my wife Dana won't get a chance to see Wire live - at least not in the near future. (She had never heard of them before she met me. (^_^)) However, I did pick up my mail from my neighbor, and found "The Scottish Play" waiting for me, so that helped "ease the transition". What a great disc! Kudos to all involved! I wonder if there's any 80's concert material available on video? It's very interesting playing "Wire On The Box" and "The Scottish Play" back to back. You can really hear the development of the band on the track Pink Flag - amazing what ~25 years (!) will do to a song. However - it would be nice to have a live concert bridging the two eras. I would think there might be some footage from Wire's opening slot for Depeche Mode at the Rose Bowl 1988.... maybe? Anyway - kudos to Wire for this 2000-era go-round - the reunion at RFH, R'n'B01/02/Send, the subsequent tours of America, and of course, "The Scottish Play". At the two shows I attended in Seattle, I found each of the members of the band to be quite gracious and patient with their fans - even if Robert hid in the back and had to be coaxed over to the edge of the stage to speak with us! (He seemed to be genuinely surprised that we wanted to speak to him, but he was a great sport, nonetheless!) And, if Wire is indeed, no more, I wish each of them the best of luck in their future endeavors. I'll be waiting to hear their new projects eagerly! (^_^) Cheers, Paul (Wire fan since 1987) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Mar 2005 02:15:57 +0000 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] That Bruce/Kevin thing..... Ari wrote: > ..... OK, Kevin's put me straight privately about the 'lining his pockets' comment (fair enough) but I still take issue with him knocking Idealcopyists about *daring* to discuss what Wire might or might not do next. As Mark Bursa pointed out, thats the whole point of this list! >>>No it wouldn't! << YES it would >>>>(I feel myself siding with Kevin Eden now! )<< >> >> Good,Kevin could use some support, Oh don't worry about Kevin Eden! I think he can handle himself! >> like that..its Bruce << >> And as such,he has 'obligations' to his fans,or,as you >> so succinctly put it when attacking Kevin:We lined his >> pockets, and Yes,he is 'just a rock star' I don't agree, a Rock Star is someone like Jim Morrison...Bruce is the reluctant guitar hero in a cult post-punk band/maker of difficult electronic abstract pieces. ,I have had several >> communications with Colin and he never ONCE said piss >> off,I'm a rock star,(other than one time before he got >> to 'know' me,but I won't go in to that) I met him a couple of years ago and was really inspiring to talk to..buzzing with energy and enthusiasm! I Hope it wasn't drugs! He's the most vocal and direct member of Wire....*but* even Colin doesn't post directly to this list very often (maybe 3 times in 5 years so why should we expect bruce to?) ] if Bruce did think of >> himself as unapproachable, then the label of smugness >> that you pinned on Kevin would apply to Bruce,I think >> not, like you and I he is a mere human being who >> obviously 'gets off' on the attention his gift for >> making music affords him, otherwise why would he >> 'stand on stage' as one of the centers of attraction? Well, Thats an interesting debate actually. Bruce hardly commands centre stage and at most gigs hids in the shadows and doesn't exactly go out of his way to draw attention to himself. I think it is possible to enjoy playing music without desiring to attract attention to oneself...but then why go on stage at all? Is it all down to money? Theres that guy Jandek isn't there who has released loads of LPs and is a real cult figure but has only done 2 gigs in his entire 30 year career or something? >> Like any musician who 'puts himself out there' having >> rappor with his fans is part and parcel of his job >> description. Well he's never spoken directly to us fans or posted to this list has he? Tom Baker hates Dr Who fans hassling him even though they probably pay for his lifestyle....he's a great English Eccentric too same as Bruce. I kind of admire them both more for that. What I was trying to say Ari was that I don't expect Bruce to communicate with me in the same way that someone like Michael Jackson does with his fans (in a horribly sanctimonious way!). On the other hand, I'm sure if I bumped into BCG in the street he'd give me time of day same as anyone (unlike Mr Jackson!) but I don't imagine he'd want to share his innermost feelings and health problems with us lot and thats fair enough isn't it? >> >> That's everybody's 'job' in a group like Wire, where >> all the players are 'stars'.... No I think Colin and Graham are the only ones who enjoy the attention. >> As a musician youself you can't tell me you don't >> 'enjoy' being in the limelight, you can't tell me >> that, when I told you I was a fan after you sent me a >> copy of your c.d,that it didn't give you a certain >> amount of 'pleasure', Oh absolutely!. I love making music and I'm glad you liked it. Don't get me wrong, if I was the guitarist in Wire I'd have written to the list by now to explain the rumours and I'd be thrilled by all the attention. However I'm not the guitarist in Wire...but if the jobs vacant I wouldn't mind auditioning.
