Did anyone catch Rowland Rivron on Radio 2 late on Thursday night, deputising for Mark Radcliffe ? In the "Crucial 3" connection competition, "Eardrum Buzz" was the third in the series, of which a clip was played for listeners to guess. Since 1) & 2) had been "Roll Over Beethoven" and The Smiths' "Bigmouth...", the connection was 'ears' - Rowland having given a clue by saying 'think what Morrisey looked like at the time', i.e. the hearing-aid on stage. No, I DIDN'T win ! The competition was won by a bloke from Buckie (Moray Firth, Scotland). Is he on this list ? By the time I'd got my act together, got out of bed, found my mobile, and finished my text message with the answer, he was already on the phone on air ! Rowland gave me the impression that he'd never even heard of Wire. But then I personally felt he struggled for the four days in Radcliffe's slot. Shame, because he's great in most of what he does : - Raw Sex, the BBC holiday programme, that R2 comedy improv thingy, and most recently C4's "Extreme Celeb Detox"...... I digress. There was talk of a series of archive releases relating to Wire's very earliest work at one stage - possibly including a (semi-)official written history. I don't know if this is still the current plan. - - Andrew - -- Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge http://www.esc.cam.ac.uk/ Programme Controller, CUR1350 http://www.cur1350.co.uk/ email: andrew@lexical.org.uk Random Walk ::: Monday, 11pm ::: cur1350.co.uk ::: is this music? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2005 03:35:30 +0000 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Smarties set to lose their tube "Mothers also like the new end because it doesn't come off easily and spill the Smarties on the floor." So desparate to catch some imagined new zeitgeist among tots for hexagonal packaging (no doubt as the result of focus groups with 4 year olds), and yet they fail to acknowledge that some Smartie eaters might come from single parent families and not have a 'Mother' I also hear that Bugs Bunny has been re-branded in a Manga stylee and renamed 'Buzz Bunn'. This sort of trashing of cultural Icons was very common in the 80s..is it coming back? ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #47 ******************************
