As Andrew's pointed out, it's "The Lost You", the video to which can be seen (and heard) here: http://www.dominorecordco.com/videos.php?video=174 > how does this compare to the other recent Hood stuff? The album's very much along those lines, and I'm not necessarily surprised that the single didn't grab you on the first encounter: it's a much more organic, less showy sound than previous, overtly electronica-influenced stuff, and it's perhaps less immediate as a consequence. But there are some wonderful, succinct and smart songs within the overgrown sprawl, and it grabbed me completely on about the third or forth listen. It hasn't yet let go. > Cold House was their last album, and a darned fine one it was too. read about it on EvilSponge: > http://www.evilsponge.org/albums/Hood__ColdHouse.htm And there are a few clips from the back catalogue, including one of the sublime Clouddead collaborations from "Cold House", here too: http://www.hoodmusic.net/index2.html Cheers, ig. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 07:31:13 -0600 From: "David McKenzie" Subject: [idealcopy] RE: idealcopy-digest V8 #43 -Futureheads, Interpol, TVOTR, Liars, LCD Soundsystem, The Wire Et AL Various thoughts on a morning when I actually have a couple minutes The Futureheads: I quite enjoy this album, but there are problems which would be more obvious if they had covered Life Begins at the Hop rather than Hounds of Love. And the lyrics make me remember my impressions of the world at 15 , not 20. But those guitars... Interpol: I just don't get it. I am just not sure if I don't get it like I never got (and never will) U2... Or like I didn't 'get' Nirvana at first. Liars: I thought the first album and singles would stick with me better than they have. TVOTR: I still expect great things from these lads. LCD Soundsystem: A fun romp. Nothing more, nor do I think it's meant as such. Silicon Teens was not much of a predictor of how interesting the rest of Daniel Millers work would prove (of course his collaborators certainly help) The Wire: Dropped my subscription 4 years ago (an a year late at that). Virtually worthless since David Toop stepped away. I am not saying he was the sole reason for it's former greatness, but his departure was a bellwether. (I know he was not entirely sacked ... Like Dan Rather or Bob Edwards were not sacked) All in all I look at suspicion at 20-year-olds playing the music of my 20s. I think I must. Humble Pie's Rockin' the Fillmore has some of the most brilliant guitar interplay I have ever heard, but a band dressing and playing the same in 1992 would have (rightly) been dismissed out of hand. The thing that mad XTC, Wire, The Pop Group, Gang of 4 brilliant from their inceptions was the obscurity (or invisibility) of their touchstones. No one is without influences, but I would be hard pressed to identify the source of Life Begins at the Hop or To Hell With Poverty. In this respect I find that in one aspect, at least, I am the opposite of my father. For his 45th birthday I asked him who his favorite artists were and bought him their latest albums: Duke Ellington's 75th Birthday Party and Bitches Brew. I listened to both (back then albums didn't come shrink wrapped) and upon hearing Miles Chases the Voodoo Down, went downstairs to talk to Dad a bit more. He informed me that Miles' work since Birth of the Cool was all crap. He was referring to the Quintet, god only knows what he would have made of Bitches Brew; I exchanged it for Woody Herman or some such the next day. (but I learned something that day about sounds undreamt) SO what's on my iPod this week> A lot of old electric stuff after reading the Mojo DM/Electro Pop issue Ayumi Hamasaki's latest, My Story. There are more sweet guitars than one might expect from a pop icon. Any of the 4 cover variants would lead you to expect something closer to Jessica Simpson than Wire, but her producer may have stolen a trick from Read and Burn production methods. Not that this is in any way comparable to R'n'B. Masha Qrella - Morr compelling Post pop Nasca Car - Abrasive cutups CMYK - New Atom (tm). Not much to say here - if you are a fan, this release has a bit to offer on several levels; if you are not, it likely sounds like more of the same. Harold Budd - Avalon Sutra. Nice - no real surprises: none needed Still waiting on new Wire material. It's getting to be about time, innit? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 10:21:42 EST From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Re: idealcopy-digest V8 #43 In a message dated 2/16/05 3:33:44 AM Central Standard Time, owner-idealcopy-digest@smoe.org writes: > I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!
