He loved it - we were able to stay in the foyer which was a bit quieter but still had a good view, which suited him well. This was his first gig - unless you count ones when he was "inside" which included 3 Kraftwerk shows and several BSP ones. It is one of those records that only works at certain times. It is a bit of a big treacle sponge pudding of an album...only good if you're in the mood. And the LCD > Soundsystem album is really enjoyable! Its got a Best-Before date on it for sure, but am enjoying those clanging cowbells for now. Has anyone heard this Bloc Party that the under-25s are going crazy about? Nice haicuts but not heard much of em yet. My fave at the momemt though is the Bitstream LP 'Domestic Economy 7', which features an electric wall heater on its front cover, and also has a track called 'Dragon 32' named after the first computer I ever owned (A bizarre Welsh variant of the Tandy TRS-80, featuring 32k Ram, one of Bill Gates first Microsoft operating systems and the then awesome 6809 processor...and fiddly analogue joysticks...and the default setting, which you couldn't change without in depth knowledge of machine code, was vomit green background with wobbly black text). Anyway its electronica with more bollocks, beats and melody than you'd expect these days...imagine a supercharged Autechre with all their avant-techno trimmings ripped off by rabid cyberbots. > Just spinning the Scritti Politti early stuff comp. Not heard this stuff before at all, only know the glossy 80s stuff which I rather like. Its OK, didn't realise how much Robert Wyatt influenced these were..must say I still prefer their blatantly sythentic 80s stuff though which in its own way is more subversive than the Squatney Jazz-Punk captured here. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 08:45:25 +0000 From: Ian Grant Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Wedding Present New Album / years best of...ALREADY?!! Ah, cool. I was thinking of buying that when I've got some spare pennies, as the clips on Boomkat sounded pretty mighty...but I've got the Roots Manuva record arriving before then, plus a few more bruising encounters with Wasteland's excellent "October" to relish too. For me, though, all of these pale into insignificance next to Hood's "Outside Closer", which is such a rich and beautiful record, somehow full of detail and yet gloriously spacious at the same time. They're extraordinary - balanced precariously between so many different things, threatening to fall off their perch at any moment - and they're capable of restoring faith in things that lesser bands seemed to have tarnished forever. Buy it, then buy it again for all your friends.... Cheers, ig. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #42 ******************************
