Back in the day we'd go see them whenever they did a tour that brought them to the Boston, New York or Providence area. I did get to see them many times. I also managed to get pissed with the band after they so generously shared their alcohol with us at an after show party at the Brown University. Another time, I can recall driving up to Boston in a car without heat during a severe snowstorm to see GoF on the Solid Gold tour - we stopped along the way and brought a load of play money which we threw over the stage during To Hell with Poverty much to the delight of Jon, who picked some up and threw it about - every concert by them was an event that for me, was far better than just about any band I'd seen - and that among a lifetime of seeing some greats - not even The Fall and Wire (two other favorites) Pixies, Ramones, original Mission of Burma tours etc. have ever been as fantastic. I am disappointed to hear that the new album is remixes and older rerecords, but I suppose they are more understanding of the marketplace for their reunion at the moment, but oh, to hear new material with Dave... I will say that I have yet to hear one newer single act (all so obviously influenced by the Gang) that can touch Entertainment, Solid Gold and the early various singles they put out. Sadly, the fame, money and press goes to the imitators rather than the innovators. (I still get angry at Pavement's cop of Mark E Smith's sound and vision). Jon King looks great!! and as someone said, Hugo is getting quite large!! now all I can do is pray for a US tour! Sorry to take up so much space but I had to post my thank you!! - - Robert Jaz p.s. I also recall that there always had to be a least one person that called for Cheeseburger at every show - much to the dismay of myself and my mates who would rather have Anthrax or any other far better song. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 12:36:23 -0800 (PST) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] Dan...... .....just thought the list might like to know that Dan has found himself a new job as an editor/reporter. Talking of Closer I went to see the film last night which - according to interviews with Patrick Marber who wrote the play - is indeed named after the Joy Davidson album. Aside from a generally depressing view of life and love I couldn't spot any specific similarities mind. The soundtrack was full of Damien Rice. I enjoyed it more than I expected to although it betrays its stage origins too often and has some Hardyesque coincidences which stretch credulity. Natalie Portman is simply ravishing in it, Clive Owen is finally watchable (far better than the wooden performance in King Arthur), Jude Law continues to show his limitations (and his work ethic) and Julia Roberts is excellent - her face is taking on interesting angles as she gets older. Indeed, he was approached by some young girl who wanted to part him from his Siouxsie t-shirt, and she in turn was with a couple of lads who, respectively, wore Smiths, Joy Division and Clash badges and a lad in a Closer t-shirt who pulled his face at my Futureheads badge. I did point out the incongruity of all this as I was the old fart out of the lot of us, but they were having none of it.
