The explanation is actually simple - to quote Can's drummer recently: "most of the music today is motivated by commercial ideas". Thank God we have a small host of groups around today that were originally founded on creative ethics, and have survived the reality of the marketplace and are that much stronger in the message they have to deliver. Joren ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2005 19:34:31 +0000 From: Mark McQuitty Subject: [idealcopy] Gang Of Photos For the GO4 fans out there, here's a link to some photos I took at the Birmingham show last Thursday. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tingy/sets/99983/ Mark ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2005 16:29:02 EST From: PaulRabjohn@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] gang of four in brum.......... can't resist a few words on this. i thought it was an interesting night in quite a few ways.... firstly , nice to see 4 of the wire massive in attendance (mark b , mark m and graeme r plus me) and good to have a few beers before and after. on arriving i was impressed and a bit saddened to see they were going to be playing in the bar (in london terms i guess this is about the same as having your shepherd's bush empire gig moved to the garage). superb for the punters who did go , suspect the promoter must be taking a right bath on this tour which is a real shame. given that the academy is about 300m from a university containing around 4000 students it was a bit chastening that the audience consisted of a couple of hunudred 30-something blokes. i know it's their loss , but boy would they have been blown away. i keep going to gigs to watch a bunch of blokes looking like mid-40's polytechnic lecturers on a night off. i am often a little wary that my memories are going to be trampled over. surprisingly this doesn't often happen. the GO4 were just superb , best performance i've seen in ages. andy gill in particular ( i mean , its all about him really , isn't it?) is just this picture of absolute focussed intensity , thrashing away with no hint of any compromise at all. the rhythm section were incredibly funky and AG just lets rip over the top ; truly breathtaking. they did about an hour , about three quarters of the first album and half the second. nothing from the sara lee era and one track ("i parade myself") off "shrinkwrapped" which didn't sound out of place at all. sorry if you missed it , cos this was one special comeback. a couple of thoughts i had during the performance. in preparation for the gig i went and downloaded "hard" and "songs of the free" to see if they were as bad as i'd expected. and truly they are awesomely dull albums. given how superb those first 2 discs were , i'm totally perplexed as to why they thought these lame funk workouts were a direction worth following. given that they had (and apparently have) such strengths , it really seemed like they pissed a career away. likewise the "comeback" Mall is not much cop , altohugh "shrinkwrapped" is actually pretty decent. then andy gill goes off to work with the likes of modern romance and michael hutchence. the thought process here just baffles me. and i have to echo ATK's point that , by any sort of objective reckoning, these performances were just way better than anytihng the recent postpunk movement could offer. and these are guys who could be their dads. yet i have to say it puts the likes of interpol/rapture/british sea power/ calla / whatever into sad perspective that really nobody (possible exception of franz ferdinand who added a pop sensibility to it) has approached the style it was done with first time around. i don't think i'm just looking at it through old fart glasses , it just shows pastiche up as , well , pastiche. so , er . where were the nations youth on this tour then? why do they buy the imitations yet not bother checking out the (big venue , heavily advertised , much bigged up in the press) real thing? too busy saving up for athlete tickets? too wrapped up in the buzz for the new sterophonics tour? i wish i knew. but i suspect the GO4 might not bother again , and that's a terrible loss. quick fashion note. dave allen's wispy goatee was , much like a late-period shriekback album , neither tasteful nor necessary. as marks photos will prove. p ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2005 15:05:50 -0800 (PST) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] O.T: For those who missed the Pixies...... ....this week-end on austin city limits,it's gonna be repeated,click on link and scroll down, 'Twas a great performance.
