Go4 were always in my memory as one of the great live experiences - but what this performance demonstrated is that they are streets ahead of the newer bands now around playing in this idiom and that they are right at the top of the tree. Back in their time I used to compare them to Zeppelin live, not because the music sounded similar but for the power that poured off the stage. Again, last night that was not an inapposite comparison. Andy Gill's guitar had an almost tangible quality, sharding out into the audience. The rhythm section sowed beats that were impossible to stay still to. And the front three seemed to interchange position more than ever, Jon King flailing and hitting things. Paralysed for me summed up one reason why they are streets ahead of newer versions - few bands now would take risks with slowing down the beat in this way and allowing silence into the set. The mindset is different. Just like Biting Tongues a few years ago - and of course Wire - these people seemed to have come to music with a desire to innovate and experiment which seems to be missing in many contemporary bands. Which sounds like old fogey-dom, but I'm still exhilarated from last night. I saw one of the great live bands.
