Which, of course, begs the question of why I was in a record shop at all. Just passing, honest. I still have Skank Bloc Bologna in all its home-made glory and a fine single it is. I saw Scritti around the time it was released at the Acklam Hall and my main recollection is the wildly differing haircuts that they had - from skin to dreads. And Green came to stand next to me to watch The Raincoats, who were headlining. I imagine he's got a good shot on him ; ) >> Funny you should say that Keith ... I've just been on the Lewes FC site, and it turns out that he was arrested last week for allegedly brawling with a cop... A selection headache looms for diminutive manager Steven King (whose programme notes are headed 'From the pen of Steven King' - nice one!). And a potential recruit for the all-time jailbirds XI. Mention of Ridsdale reminds me of a story about the height of his glory days at Leeds. Apparently when he signed Seth Johnson, the player and his agent went along to meet the man, expecting that SJ's four thousand a week at Derby might get upped to somewhere in the region of six to eight. Ridsdale's first words (allegedly ) were 'Right, twenty grand, take it or leave it'. Both Johnson and agent were completely gob-struck, and Ridsdale took that as a no. 'Playing hard to get eh? Twenty-five'. By the time they had found their voices, Ridsdale had put #37,000 on the table ... and Johnson then spent most of the time injured or in the reserves, I believe (Mark Bursa, who knows this story already I think, will confirm). On topic, ish, I saw a band called Whine in one of those mid-90s Camden crawls. Was so impressed I spoke to one of them afterwards, who didn't need much prompting to admit to a hefty Wire influence. I wonder what happened to them. Did anyone watch it then? My fave moment was towards the end when Smith, in his slurred voice, was telling us that he'd improved as a singer, and we then cut to him in the studio "singing" I Can Hear The Grass Grow, which would surely have left the casual viewer wondering just how bad he was before. Seth & his agent were looking for about #15k but would settle for #10k. Risible's opening gambit was atually #30 grand, not #20 grand. The rest of teh story is true. Of course Seth got injured within a few weeks and has subsequently made a career for himself as a Darren Anderton impersonator. And we're still paying him #37 grand a week. Y'know, whenever I get excited about these things, I am reminded of going to a dinner dance with my parents in my youth to see The Glenn Miller Orchestra (minus Glenn who had departed this mortal coil some years earlier). The musicians were flawless, the parents had a great time, and I wondered what the point was. Hopefully the new CI material will not prompt the same questions. Thanks for the opportunity anyway, it could have been great. Uri wan't the only one who made the trek - guess you must have been there before me. By the time they came on there were about 20 people who WERE on the list (mainly hideous Camden trendies) who were turned away. Sill, hung around in th hope that the doors might open once the band came on. But then the landlord (a 5ft 2in goblin) came out and told everyone to fuck off. Still, at least I heard the first couple of songs (opener is What we all want, then Not Great men, since you asked, and sounding mighty fine too) before repairing to the curry house. Mark I could see the stage from a hole in one of the blacked out windows and caught the bass player playing some powerful and recognisable basslines but it was far too depressing to hang around effectively seeing what I'm missing. It brought back memories of catching groups like that in little pubs and clubs where they were basically in yer face. That was the way to see and enjoy gigs. I bet that most listers best gig experiences were at sweaty little pubs/clubs, I know mine were.
