What a revelation. Just dropped it into my old system last night and the extra detail is worth every penny of its 250 UK pounds (from Richer Sounds' Bristol branch). I expected a minor improvement over the system's Kenwood A-class amp (which has fairly nasty chipboard speakers, slightly modified with polyprop capacitors and hard wiring). Even CD-Rs sound incredibly natural and for the first time I can hear many instruments sounding as if they are in their correct place - a background instrument sounds further away from the listener than something in the foreground. This was commented on by my hi-fi cynic girlfriend without prompting from me... I expect further astonishment when the Sony XA3000ES CD player arrives... Test discs: Dark Side of the Moon, Bossanova, Chairs Missing (which I did a hi-fi test on vinyl in the 80s using Linn turntable, etc. CD and this amp is far better), Buena Vista Social Club, Faded Seaside Glamour (The Delays), Talkie Walkie (Air CD-R), Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy (Eno CD-R). ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Why not? because it's on the digital channel and I don't have access to that yet. This is part of the corporate plan to get us into digital, by putting all the good stuff out via BBC3 & 4...sometimes, weeks later getting an airing on terrestrial, round midnight. The thinking being that, if you are the type of viewer who likes this stuff (ie programmes of quality for people with an attention span of more than 30secs) you'll have no problem forking out the #50 for a digibox (no mention of the reception issue, aerial upgrade) For months now every programme that has been 'trailed' on BBC (arts, ducu., history etc.) & I think 'that looks good' is going out on BBC4. I've heard it described as the channel that BBC2 was meant to be. 99.9% of BBC terrestrial output is brainless... soaps, 'dramas' that are *really* soaps, makeover your house makeover your garden, blah blah...endlessly, nauseatingly smug So, to end this rant and incorporate an apology to everyone who lives in a country where the people are not taxed to the tune of 2 Billion (under threat of prison time if you don't pay) a year which is then handed over to the Establishment Broadcasting corporation the point is I've paid for something I won't be able to watch I used to be a defender of the BBC & licence fee now they've got down in the gutter with the commercial channels, I fucking hate them.... Written like a true Scotsman!!! Be fair - the BBC stepped in when ITV digital collapsed (an inferior subscription-based version of Freeview) and has produced a quality channel in BBC 4 (rather than more toilet makeovers or coke-addled D-list celebs tap-dancing in the jungle or whatever) (The less said about the execrable BBC3 the better, though it does have a "punk night" on Saturday). However it is in the Government's interest for Freeview to become widely adopted (by those that haven't gone with Sky or cable) as it wants to shut down the analogue TV frequencies in the next few years (so it can auction them off for more mobile phone channels, allowing da yoof to download quadrophonic ringtones or send 3D videos of their new trainers to their mates 10 feet away in All Bar One). So fork out your #39.99 (or better still - pick up an old On Digital box at a boot fair for a fiver) and help boost BBC4's viewing figures. There are calls within the BBC to "dumb down" Four - whihc will mean no Fall documentaries, programmes by Victor Lewis-Smith on the Radiophonic workshop, etc....
