I can trot out my Kevin Coyne anecdote on this sad occasion. Back in my late teens I was a more regular concert-goer, and for some reason decided to go to see Country Joe and The Fish in about 1977 in Brisbane Australia. I can't remember CJ & the F at all, but the bizarre support act was one Kevin Coyne who I had never heard of (a stranger combination I cannot imagine to this day). Kevin, who performed solo with backing tapes left an indelible impression on a number of people that night. I know at least five people drove 500 km each way to see his next gig the next night. I went out and bought every Kevin Coyne record I could lay my hands on. Phillip Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! I loved the first Hatfield album but played it some years ago and found it hadn't held its charm, but I should probably revisit it. Amusing to see that they have re-entered the culture through Jonathan Coe's novel The Rotter's Club, which sadly has far fewer references to them then I would have anticipated (namechecks Henry Cow too). I read recently that it's to have a TV adaptation early next year so I'll be tuning in in the expectation of hearing some early Virgin material for possibly the first time on prime-time TV (Tubular Bells excepted). I've only played it 2-3 times so far - there's a lot to get through - but it really is v good. Not sure it's the place to start with Low, but there realls is some excellent stuff on it. The 'cool' Manc crowd didn't help though - hence only one, perfunctory, encore. Previous time I saw them (in Stourbridge, West Mids, earlier this year) a much rowdier crowd of hardcore Fall types got treated to about 6 encores (many of which featured vocals performed from the dressing room by a still-quite-incapacitated Mark E. Read this on another list re the Liverpool gig a few nights later... ....saw the fall in Liverpool last night and they rocked big style. Mark seemed in a good mood and we even caught a smile off him. He was pretty pissed though, and got his jacket caught in the drumkit and then proceeded to pull it away, ripping it and nearly taking down the drums in the process. The lad done well. John Cooper Clarke was also ace >>>Shambolic organisation meant a truncated 'gales set (so the DJ could play some more Jasmine Minks records, presumably) which meant by way of protest we were treated to a quality - and lengthy - version of the Prefects' Going through the motions. Mr Lloyd swigging from onstage bottle of Jamesons between songs. Excellent! Would love to have heard that. I was playing that track on the ametur wankers cd a few days ago. classic!! >>>BTW, buy a copy of the 'gales reissued Pigs on Purpose album. If Cherry Red sell enough, they'll reissue Hysterics, the Nightingales supreme recorded moment. And it's sounding good, too. Also featuring Parafin Brain and Urban Ospreys - - the latter is up there with The Crunch as my fave 'gales track! I enjoyed that book. Nothing earth-shattering or anything, but an enjoyable read. I lived in the part of Wales mentioned in it (Llyn Peninsula) for a few yrs many years ago, so that was a bonus, too! Think the sequel is now out. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Dec 2004 12:51:34 -0600 From: "Stephen Graziano" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] B&S on this topic - I just scored a DVD titled Miles Electric which features the entirety of his 37-minute set at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970. Wonderfully recorded, great band, and great surrounding context of musicians and critics (Stanley Crouch is particularly funny, even if he's slamming Miles' electric phase). A gurgling, bubbling cauldron of a jam - in the best sense of the term. sg http://www.sourmashusa.com - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: ; Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 4:42 PM Subject: Re: [idealcopy] B&S > In a message dated 04/12/2004 01:23:08 GMT Standard Time, > steeleknight@lineone.net writes: > > This really was the jazz fusion stuff Mr Bursa mentioned disparagingly > (surprise!) a few posts ago, more so than Colosseum whose live double I > have a soft spot for despite not having heard it for 30 years probably > > > > I've got that too but haven't played it for years. The mark ii Colliseum were > more rocky with Gary Moore.I have a couple of albums but that was at the > death of that type of rock.Within a very short time The Sex Pistols & others > were moving in to my radar & that was a saviour i can tell you. > I love Slap Happy & Henry Cow & above all Hatfield & The North.Missed a > chance to see H & T N & have regretted it to this day. > > Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Dec 2004 19:48:49 -0800 From: Paul Pietromonaco Subject: [OT] Aphex Twin?
