My wife and closest friends are HUGE VdGG/Hammill fans, and they were quite excited over the weekend about this announcement. Unfortunately, she knows that Joy Division will never regroup, so the "favor" will not be returned, and Wire tours the US anyway. I am hoping for some major pity from this group... :-/ I do feel guilty about sitting on the second row for something like this. cheers! - -fernando On Tue, 30 Nov 2004 09:44:46 EST, markbursa@aol.com wrote: > Probably to the snorting derision of *some* folks here, I shall be at *that* > one.....;-) > > steeleknight@lineone.net wrote:As if the Gang of Four reunion wasn't enough, > Van der Graaf Generator have > reformed and are playing the RFH (shades of someone else here) on Friday > 6 May. > > To say I'm excited wouldn't even be close. > > > Oh Lordy. I think Bernard does best the Isolation and She's Lost Control songs... but nothing like the original (as I can imagine it). Aside from the odd LWTUA and Atmosphere playing at Ian's anniversary and odd b-day excuse, I guess they held out the longest than any other group in playing previous' group covers. Exceptions can be John Fogerty and Neil Halstead (doing Slowdive songs), but I am not clear on those two. may be this is considered an anorak question/topic... gasp! cheers! - -fernando On Tue, 30 Nov 2004 13:00:18 EST, markbursa@aol.com wrote: > > > Unfortunately, she knows that Joy Division will never regroup,<< > OK, there's an obvious problem, but these days Messrs Hook, Sumner & Morris > are less hung up about the fact that NO and JD are separate entities. The noise last time round was quite remarkable. You may be pleasantly surprised. You certainly appear to have married well! For the few interested, here's some more info from the www.vandergraafgenerator.co.uk site - new material and they've kept this quiet for well over a year! Not to mention a forward looking attitude that should chime with people on this list. Another the Keith After the "classic" line-up got together and played "Still Life" at the end of Peter Hammill's solo gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in February 2003, the guys started thinking about playing and recording together again. In September, after a summer of email exchanges, they held a band meeting and planned a get-together for February 2004 at Pyworthy in Devon. Peter Hammill's heart attack threatened to scupper these plans but having made a speedy recovery they went ahead. This wasn't an exercise in nostalgia and no old Van der Graaf material was played all week but instead a serious amount of jamming went on and work done on several new numbers. During the summer of 2004, Hammill, with input from the other three, worked to put together a double CD for release in the early part of 2005. Whilst the Royal Festival Hall gig is a one-off, there is talk of further gigs as long as the vibe remains favourable, and more recording in the Autumn. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of fernando I should run for the hills... but instead, I will have to fly to Europe and see the gig. (That said, I am not young either!) Well, that and being in Puerto Rico while a kid did not bring much chances to see live bands... and they did not play there. I will definitely go with an open mind, although obscured by the fact that I have sampled a bit of their music (solo and group), and it is not my cup of tea. Every time that I hear a bit of their music, I cannot help but to imagine Spinal Tap. (?!?!?!?!?!) I think that watching my friend's reaction and their enthusiasm will be good enough for me. If things get bad, I got an iPod and I am not afraid to use it (with etymotic headphones ;). This may be the concert with the lowest expectations ever. I watched the Dutch program on Nick Drake, and there is a voice at the beginning stating (something like): "if you are invited to girl's apartment for the first time and she has Nick Drake, you must marry this girl." Although VdGG is not that for me, this girl did have Drake, Tindersticks and a couple of others that made me said, mmmm.... yeah. ;) It is funny when common tastes collide from such different perspective, such as my post-punk roots in tastes, and hers coming from VdGG and Nick Cave. cheers! - -fernando On Nov 30, 2004, at 2:21 PM, Keith Knight wrote: > > Ah, but Fernando have you ever SEEN Van der Graaf?
