And what about dapper? Never even knew it was used in the english language as well! Nowadays in Dutch we only use it in the sense of brave/courageous, but apparently in English there're more meanings/subtleties now. Dap7per [adjective] 1. trim: neat and elegant ( refers to men ) 2. lively: alert and lively or brisk 3. nimble: small and active or nimble [15th century. From Middle Dutch or Middle Low German dapper , 3bold, heavy.2 The modern meanings, 3elegant, nimble,2 evolved from 3stolid, sturdy,2 perhaps ironically.] Funny how words and their meanings evolve, traveling geographically & through time. Listened to Coil's Black Antlers CD last night and noticed a line on "Sex with Sun Ra" that I hadn't noticed before: "...most accidents happen in the home..." hard to hear this and not think: Christ, how horribly prophetic. Then, if that weren't enough, I started reading Chris Petit's novel Back From The Dead, and there is a charachter who dies in a fall down the stairs... Too much fucking death around for my liking at the moment. Fergus __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Mark //// Certainly ,that's the only context I've ever heard the word used in, Mark: it comes as news to me that there's a slew of alternative meanings:- certainly never heard of it used as pertaining to bravery. Skipping back a few posts, too, I've never once heard the word "ornery" used by anyone I know, applied to varmints, critters or otherwise......... Derek (who once had a black cat called 'Critter':- suited it too: an 'entire', semi-feral tomcat with a fistful of razors in each paw.....) Meet the all-new My Yahoo! Not warmed to it in 23 years. ((( Ye wha' ??? A stunning track. Hmm.... the "Is there a turkey on '154' " debate:- " 40 versions I actually *really* like. It seems to me to contain some elements that are essential Wire trademarks. Unusual off-kilter loops of strangely-timbred and not immediately identifiable instruments decorating a really pared-down backdrop, with what someone called Wire's 'strange clockwork geometry'. Add to that the "Is it noun or verb" wordplay of "Niagra falls...." and in two or three short minutes, you've got'em, right there. Love the bass sound, too. On the other hand, "Once is enough" has never been a great fave, but it hasn't become a 'skipper', because the opening burst of "Map Ref..." just *doesn't* sound right without that vicous resonant guitar drone topped off by what sounds like someone dropping a set of pans *and* a canteen of cutlery preceeding it.. "From the nursery" again isn't a *huge* favourite, but again hasn't become a skipper, because the flow of the album just doesn't feel right with it missed. On such a sublime LPee, one 'nearly a turkey' is such a small blemish, I can accept it as filler...... I think it's true that it'd sound more at home on Pink Flag, though. Other tracks from 154 that have been questioned ie "I should have known better", and "Two people in a room", well you're barking mad, gentlemen.....;-) Meet the all-new My Yahoo! Well, it is slightly back in the direction of their first EP; I know a few people who think it's a waste of time. I'd hate for anyone to spend a fiver on my say-so and be disappointed!
