It describes a new CD I've purchased and enjoyed. Feel free to delete now if it's "not your bag, baby...yeah!") 20 years ago, there was a small college band called Camper Van Beethoven. They broke up as a lot of bands do, and went on to do various things - including the forming the band Cracker. Then, a one-off joke they had recorded - a complete cover of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk done on a 4 track recorder in a snowed in cabin in the woods whilst waiting for the drummer's broken arm to heal after an inner tubing accident - was recovered. The band reconvened to finish the project, and discovered there was still a connection. They are actually doing a little bit of touring in the states right now - - just missed 'em, dammit! - and have completed a new album. Amazingly enough, the new album is not only a completely new project, but it's one of the most focused recordings they've ever done - easily able to sit comfortably amongst their earliest recordings. The CD is called "New Roman Times", and you can read Allmusic's thoughts about it here: http://tinyurl.com/4yjex Warning = it *is* a concept album - basically it's the story of a Texas youth who joins the military, becomes disillusioned and joins an anti-government militia - but the songs are pretty strong. You only really connect the storyline when you look at the CD booklet. It might not be the ultimate album of all time, but it's a very strong recording from a band I thought would never get back together. Words On Music announces it will re-release December, For Against=B9s out-of-print second album from 1988. December is a fan favorite and the album is now considered by critics to be a forerunner of the dream pop scene popularized in England just a year or two later. The album also injects elements of the brooding, Factory Records sound found on their debut, Echelons, which was re-released by Words On Music in August 2004. The December reissue will be remastered with a new six-panel digipack design from Bruce Licher. Look for an early Spring 2005 release date. Thanks to Independent Project Records for making this reissue possible! =20 WIRE=B9s =B3OUTDOOR MINER=B2 TRIBUTE OUT NOW! A Houseguest's Wish: Translations of Wire=B9s =8COutdoor Miner' has now been released! The album can be ordered directly through Words On Music or through many fine on-line stores. Visit our order page here: www.words-on-music.com/order.html A Houseguest=B9s Wish is Words On Music's 25th Anniversary tribute to the seminal Wire song, "Outdoor Miner." Released in 1979 as a 7" single (and appearing in a more skeletal version on their Chairs Missing LP), Outdoor Miner has been long regarded by fans and critics as one of Wire=B9s finest moments =8B and one of their rare early excursions into unbridled, sugar coated pop. =20 Words On Music has assembled interpretations by 19 artists from five countries (Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Canada, USA) into one diverse collection =AD translating the song into versions ranging from folk to punk. Featured appearances on this tribute include: * An acoustic excursion by Swervedriver frontman Adam Franklin * Lush's dazzling 1991 recording * A buoyant pop rendition by Typewriter (Lucy Show singer Mark Bandola) * Flying Saucer Attack=B9s fuzzed-out version from 1995 * The Beach Boys-esque rendering by Kick On The Floods=8B the new project by For Stars singer Carlos Forster. * Versions by three Words On Music artists: The Meeting Places, Fiel Garvie, and Should=20 The Outdoor Miner single was poised to be Wire's breakthrough song in their native England in 1979 until the British Market Research Bureau, compilers of the BBC charts, withdrew the single on allegations EMI had improperly hyped the single's sales. As a result, Wire narrowly missed appearing on the influential Top Of The Pops television program, and remained a band with credible cult status but no hit records. On the Silver Anniversary of Outdoor Miner's release, Words On Music sets free this brilliant pop song once more through a full-length album tribute. Choosing one Wire song for this project is particularly apt in light of the band's 1991 album The Drill =8B which contains nine reworkings of the title track. Outdoor Miner's strange subject matter =8B that of the leaf-dwelling serpentine miner insect =8B was once described by Wire singer and bassist Graham Lewis as their 'least commercial lyric.' But by integrating such impenetrable words into what is otherwise an extremely hummable, catchy pop song, Outdoor Miner transcends niche, cult-song status: it is a fertile composition capable of metamorphosis.
