Sounds a bit like reggae to me....;-) This is precisely why I sometimes feel lists like this are a bit pointless, as just what *does* constitute a "punk" bassline? I always liked Magazine's "Definitive gaze" bassline meself. But is it punk, m'friends? Although held in Bury St Edmunds cathedral it was hugely oversubscribed and I was one of those standing in the grounds with the service broadcast through an effective PA - I'd guess there were about 1,500 outside. Very Diana - bursts of applause from outside on occasion must have sounded odd to those inside. It started to rain just as the service started and there was a fine drizzle almost throughout, although it didn't really matter. A full range of mourners across the sexes and ages. Rarely has a funeral congregation been more comfortable in black. It followed a traditional C of E high church service and lasted about an hour and a half. There were effective speeches from Paul Gambaccini (only slightly self-satisfied on this occasion) remembering Peel's public persona, putting John Walters firmly in the frame and making some reasonable broad statements - not just that Peel had launched more bands than anyone else but that he had probably heard more different music than anyone else, anywhere anytime. I hadn't thought of the last one before and it gave me pause. Peel's younger brother Alan gave a good eulogy and the kids spoke through a third party (pointing out that their genetic inheritance prevented them speaking themselves without breaking down). Their picture of Peel as a slightly grumpy figure, complaining at lights being left on and drinks half-drunk left lying around could have been written by my kids frankly. They revealed that he had been given pocket money by his wife for decades as he couldn't be trusted to spend money sensibly. Their statement that he used to be frustrated that they haven't done much with their lives but that perhaps they will now he's not standing in their way was really funny and did them credit. Recorded music played was Howlin' Wolf's Going Down Slow, Roy Orbison's Running Scared and a segment from Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto #2. At the end of the service, the Top Gear theme music played, we heard segments of his broadcasts, then the Liverpool football crowd singing You'll Never Walk Alone and then inevitably Teenage Kicks. We cried and applauded. Then everyone walked away in quiet contemplation across the autumnal churchyard. I'm really glad I went. That's a wicked tune there and one of the most unforgettable basslines I've heard. I'm also partial to the bassline in Delta 5 - "Journey", although I can't quite justify calling that one a punk song. More new wave/dark dance music/etc. It's good either way, though.
