I'd like to recommend a book which I think would appeal to quite a few of you out there... a number of you will doubtless be aware of it, it's called Haunted Weather, by David Toop, published by Serpent's Tail. "Is it possible to grow electronic sounds, as if they were plants in a garden ? Can the resonance of a empty room be played like an instrument ? Why are childhood memories of sound and silence so important to our emotional development ? Is it valid to classify audio recordings of wind or electrical hum as musical compositions ? Can computers replace more conventional instruments like the piano or the electric guitar ? How can improvisation co-exist with computer software ? Why have the sounds of our environment become so important to sound artists and why is atmosphere so important in music ? " David writes about the above areas with great intelligence and humour, and his characteristically breathtaking scope of knowledge. What's always been so enjoyable about his writing is the anecdotal and organic nature of it. The holistic feel of the connectedness of everything. Micro/macro, poetic/prosaic, political/personal, it's all in the mix - the totality of experience. I think it's a very relevant approach to the subject of Haunted Weather, as the *borders* (such as they are) between music/noise, production/diffusion, electronic/organic (interchangeable now, surely ?) are so permeable, all sorts of biological metaphors spring to mind, it's all one big fascinating flux, an ocean, not just of sound, but of sonic sensations, memory triggers, emotional connections... I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's one that will reward repeated readings. I'm halfway through a second reading. Also... there's an excellent double CD compilation connected with the book, available from http://www.stuabgold.com It features Chris Watson, Pansonic, John Butcher, Kaffe Mathews, Derek Bailey/John Stevens, Taku Sugimoto, Autechre, Christian Marclay, Matmos, Ryoji Ikeda, Fennesz, Peter Cusak, Christina Kubisch, Keith Rowe/John Tilbury, to name but a few... Mojo gave it a good (4 star overall) review and were raving about Planet of Sound.... "most astonishing of all is the final track, a 15 minute version of POS, that in it's repetitive flutter and scrape re-locates the volcanic core of the original to a place that's no less gripping but altogther stranger". It gets another mention in their monthly playlist, too. Sounds intriguing!! I just listened to Title TK which I think is half good. It is only a half album with a bunch of crap (i kinda like it though) laying around from 1999. One of my favourite songs "Forced To Drive" is on it. On the purple tape- I will have to revisit it. I gave it a token listen to when I picked it up. Generally I really dig Pilgrim/Surfer. They are almost a different band later in their career. Subbacultcha was one of my fav's from Trompe and I didn't realize that it was such an earlier track. Good Post! Currently contemplating which new Pixies gig I am gonna buy on Disclive. paul (ye154) Mind you, in the UK we tend to get Surfer Rosa and Pilgrim on the same disc! Perhaps I should pay more attention to which album I'm listening too... I bet non-Pixies fans are enjoying this! _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. No wonder the Pixies first stuff was so good - >the source is strong. > I've been looking for this Frank Black - Frank Black Francis CD for a couple of weeks now and can't find it in any of the stores around here. The early material, as evidenced by the Purple Tape that I already have, is staggeringly good. I was lucky enough to see Frank Black And The Catholics at Smith's Olde Bar here a couple of years ago, as well as see the (reformed) Pixies a couple of weeks ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pixies show that I saw (second night in Atlanta), but a friend of mine had somewhat of a different opinion. He said that the vibe between band members was quite strong during the Coachella show that he attended, but that, at present, it seems like the band is already starting to dislike each other quite a bit. I didn't get that impression when I saw them, but, then again, I wasn't at the Coachella show. At any rate, Frank Black will be recording another solo CD soon...his first CD in ten years without the Catholics. It should be interesting, to say the least. Music purchases... Right now, I'm looking for the new Windsor For The Derby CD, but haven't been able to find it either. Most music stores here have it on order, but nobody has any copies at present. I did buy the new Duran Duran singles box set the other day, Singles 1986-1995. This one sits nicely alongside the Duran Duran - Singles 81-85 that I bought last year, although these latter singles are clearly the weaker ones. Still, this one is worth it because it pretty much has everything decent that Duran Duran recorded 86-95. On the subject of the recent election: There does appear to be several instances of computer ballot malfunction (or, better said, a malfunction on the part of poll officials to understand the database capacity of these computer ballots). There doesn't, however, appear to be any sign of fraudulent activity and, at present, it doesn't look like enough to swing Kerry's way anyway. As a Bush supporter, I should jump in and answer some of the questions that have been asked here, but, at present, I'm a bit weary of spending the past week constantly defending my vote online. It seems that, for every one Bush voter on this site, there are about twenty Kerry voters who want to know why I voted the way that I did. I should have a pre-written "cut and paste" to answer questions or something. I'll jump and and discuss it in more detail when I have more time, though. No disrespect intended if I don't answer someone's questions here.
