First of all, the Kerry supporters here on IdealCopy are much more diplomatic than the folks at Murmurs.com (R.E.M. site). Here's a toast to rational debates instead of blind reactiveness. When I wrote earlier about voting for Bush in much part because of the way that he stood up to the United Nations and their current inability to enforce their actions, I should have specified one source that influenced me quite a bit. The Greatest Threat by Richard Butler, former U.N. Security Council chairman prior to the forced exit of U.N. inspectors in 1998; Butler writes of the repeated attempts of Iraqis to thwart inspection visits to "presidential palaces", etc. and of the fact that, since Iraq owes Russa $8 billion from the Iran/Iraq conflicts, that Russia often stood behind the interests of Iraq at U.N. meetings because of these monetary intests. The U.N. sent inspectors in the weeks before our attack in 2003, but these inspections were proving as ineffective as those prior to 1998...prior to when Saddam Hussein's government had four years unchecked to do whatever he wanted. Even Al Gore stated once (in a Commonwealth Club Speech) that, while he didn't believe Saddam Hussein to be an imminent threat at present, that Saddam Hussein would prove to be an imminent threat if given five more years or so. (Gore's stance was that we shouldn't "interrupt" the war on terror to send troops to Iraq, but I personally consider our war in Iraq and the war on terror to be one and the same....the 9/11 Commission Report gives some details on this...no evidence whatsoever that Iraq played at part in 9/11, of course, but there has been a relationship between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda). Many opponents of Bush feel that we shouldn't have taken such a hard strike against the Taliban harboring Al Qaeda after 9/11, for the reason that the terrorists would simply retaliate and launch another attack against us. Personally, I'm glad that this mentality was not at hand when Hitler launched an attack on Poland. I don't have a problem with gay relationships, of course. I have several gay friends here in Atlanta and am pretty much expecting that gay marriages will be commonplace here in America within the decade. I have opinions, of course, on the marriage issue, but, like the issue of abortion, I didn't decide the President based on this. Unlike many conservatives, I have to think twice about decisions to legislate morality....it's always a tough battle of attrition in viewpoints. I'm didn't vote for Bush because he let me keep more tax money, although that's a good thing. (Keep in mind that I didn't say that Bush "gave" me tax money...he simply let me keep more of what I had already earned.) I do applaud Bush's drive toward an "ownership society", though....this was another cornerstone of why I voted for him. I was a strong opponent of Kerry's repeated jabs at the top wealthy 1%. A wise man once said, "You can't help the poor by destroying the rich." Just ask the lower-to-middle class yacht manufacturers that were laid off in the late 80's when the luxury tax on yachts was implemented. Any attempt to help the poor by penalizing the wealthy ultimately proves to be disasterous...when the wealthy 1% is able to keep more of the money that they earned, they either spend this money and their consumerism helps companies to afford to hire more people...resulting in more government revenue, or they invest this money in stocks that allow companies to hire people, do research, and create goods. Guns...I don't own any guns. I'm largely opposed to gun control legislation, though. That's all for now. I'm tired after yet another Interpol concert (Hey, Miles...good talking to ya tonight.) I just found about it when reading the Interpol board today (Thursday) before taking off for Atlanta. I didn't feel so bad about missing it when I saw that the show was actually on Wednesday. No way that I could have taken Wednesday off too and still had enough vacation time for the holidays. I do wish I could have been there, though! >That's all for now. I'm tired after yet another Interpol concert (Hey, >Miles...good talking to ya tonight.) Same here, wish we'd gotten to talk some more. I need to recount the MoB gathering -- was delighted to renew acquaintances with Jason and meet a passel more nice folks. A smashing success, IMO. I can't agree with my fellow "red stater"'s political views (though I found them much more reasonably and calmly expressed than, well, almost every other Bush supporter), but when it comes to live music, I think Jason and I can agree that Interpol has pretty much lapped the field. And nothing that anyone says to me here about their lyrics will get me down about them, not when I still have that magnificent regular-set-ending "Obstacle 1" clanging around in my head, not to mention the prospect of seeing them do it again in Asheville tomorrow night. In fact, the only glitch in their performance was Paul Banks' hat, which, combined with him growing out his blonde hair in back, gave him a distressingly Kid Rock-like appearance. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 2004 23:16:00 -0000 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Fuck:,George wins..................
