It's uncanny but my thoughts ran along a similar line.I was 3 feet away from him in Glasgow in april at the Wire gig at Triptych but couldn't bring myself to walk up to him & shake his hand.I would have wanted to let him know how much his shows had impressed upon me over the last 30 years but i suppose I would have blubbered some nonsense & looked a complete jerk. So I didn't. Now if I had just shook his hand & walked away I think he may have appreciated that possibly more. Chris ( who can recite "Go & sit upon the grass" by Ivor Cutler even not having heard it in maybe 20 years) And on topic I remember him apologising on air to Graham & Bruce for not showing up the previous evening for a scheduled meeting because of some personal thing. He actually said that he wasn't up for it that night or something.I've no idea whether they heard it or he apologised again later but funny how some things stick in your mind. And AT Keith - He played the whole of Side 1 of Phaedra by Tangerine Dream on Christmas Eve 1974 to close the show. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 2004 17:07:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Jan Noorda Subject: [idealcopy] Peel (passing of a Legend) I have to admit, it would be ridiculous to thank everyone who did made music what struck me or organized that. It is over reacted. (not bad behaviour). This news was not a commercial you know. With loosing John Peel we became reminded of parts of the past where we had good times with. And with reaching this and knowing there is no next one again with him we loose a part of our own and the reminded parts become memories. Probably most of us thanked him already by just listening to his programm. Or saying to friends. Keep an eye on his programm. And John, who felt probably just doing his work which he liked very much by giving without prejudice several music a chance to listen to. And now? Sometimes things look so normal until they disappear. Of course it would be hypocrite to do pathetic and buy all Peel sessions now. And give others no chance to listen to. Nice words from Nick Cave now saying in Later. John was a good one. And he's gone and further Colin is doing Githead tomorrow in France Neubauten did a nice performance watchable on the internet in Italy with a supporters Choir. Next wednesday the gruenstuck performance. the Duncan / Lewis ceedee is somewhere in a plane between Italy and Holland Andrew H3O McKenzie made some nice commercials for promoting football in Iceland The Touch possie are hard working for releasing a new Benni Nilsen ceedee Tuxedomoon annouces they are touring also next year. And maybe it would be good to tribute for John Peel doing the Crazy About Love session again somewhere. Not exactly the same, but the idea was OK. A little improvising in a special context. Always 'He of Wire'...Subliminal origins of 'He said' perhaps? ;-) >>And AT Keith - He played the whole of Side 1 of Phaedra by Tangerine Dream on Christmas Eve 1974 to close the show.<< The oddest one I remember was him playing the whole of Simple Minds' Reel to Reel Cacophony - on the grounds that he didn't expect it to be any good, but was surprisingly so. There is, really, no-one who can replace him which is why we mourn. There are three Ivor Cutler albums on sale for a fiver each at Fopp at present and I think I'll buy one at the weekend as a tribute. An interesting side issue to come - how will the NME deal with Peel's death? This should be their biggest seller since the Presley death issue ('Remember him this way') but I suspect they just won't be able to handle it, unless they bus in guest writers (many of whom are probably already gearing up for huge Mojo / Uncut specials) and tear up the house style of short articles. I'm almost tempted to buy it next week just to get upset. Another the Keith (somewhat teed off that a piece I did on Peel last night while very tired hasn't got through the idealcopy gateway for some reason - in fact another piece last week didn't make it at all and a couple of others took some days.
