Still, you see what I mean about the ever-shifting line-up. It's not like the Fall, where people get the sack and rarely return - it's more a case of who's available from the Nightingales playing "squad" (ie anybody who's ever been in the band, or anyone who fancies a go!) > > Mark Bizarre! Squad rotation!! I'm reliably informed by someone formerly of this parish, that the VTB drummer is playing with them in Manchester tomorrow. Maybe they should have a subs bench. "Fuzz, you're having a bad night, I'm bringing Mr Volcano on for tactical reasons", says player manager, Robert Lloyd! I had the misfortune to hear "Psychedelic Underground" a couple of times in the mid-70's when a friend got it on import , having been impressed with "Dance of the Lemmings" and "Yeti". As I say, I gave it a couple of listenings, but believe me, "once is enough". It was the absolute pits, being full of extended, ininspired jamming/noodling by what sounds like a cast of thousands. Unfocussed, acid-excused hippy dross. The Germanic equivalent of what Zappa lampooned with the "Hey punk" off "We're only in it for the money" , you know, the lines about "I'm going up to 'Frisco to join a psychedelic band"/ "I'm gonna sit and play my bongoes in the dirt"..........except of course, for 'Frisco, read Munich, and it's about right. I thought when they'd 'split into AD-1 and AD-2, and slimmed from a cast of thousands into a more manageable 5 or 6, they did *some* good stuff, "Dance of the Lemmings" [2 sides of, anyway] and "Wolf City" being my favourites. Less noodling, more structure, but still somewhat odd. By the time you get to "Made in Germany, it's all long-faced piano, and lyrics in English, with all the 'wierd' squashed out of them. "Vive le trance" was probably the last 1/2 decent effort, but even that was a pretty bog-standard rock album, with none of the gothic oddness that made Amon Duul 2 appeal to me in the first place. The reason behind the commune 'split' was that Duul 2 wanted to concentrate on making music, the Duul 1 collective were more driven by the political activism of that time, and the music was just a bolt-on extra. As for "Paradiesworts", can't say I've ever heard it, but if it's anything like "Psychedelic Underfoot" [sic], then I can be thankful for small mercies. Derek W New and Improved Yahoo! Honestly! I'm not prepared to divulge my sources, but I am assured they are, erm, reliable! Dunno what pedals they're supposed to be though, and I declined the suggestion to ask him! Incidentally, to sort of get back on topic, I bought the new ltd edition Nightingales 7" single, Workshy Wunderkind and my number is...0154!! They looked pretty modern to me (and I have been within a matter fo feet of said pedals). One was a standard Boss pedal, and another was one of those chrome-looking 'retro' pedals that look like a very small dodgem car, designed to be driven by a mouse. THe other was nondescript sort of thing you might find in a junk shop. >>Incidentally, to sort of get back on topic, I bought the new ltd edition Nightingales 7" single, Workshy Wunderkind and my number is...0154!!<< And very fine it is too. Meanwhile further evidence of the ramshackle charm of the 'gales arrived in this morning's email, hoping to recruit someone off their mailing list to drive them to Manchester tonight. In an ambulance. >>dearest chums this is a last minute long shot but you never know... does anyone want to go and see the nightingales play in manchester tomorrow night (tues 5 oct) and get paid a few quid for doing so? we need a driver, preferably with an estate car, who would collect peter and eamonn, plus a few guitars and amps from selly oak, birmingham at 16.00 hrs, drive 'em to the gig, stay under the limit and drive 'em back afterwards (approx 23.30). suffice to say, if anybody is up for it they'd get a smallish fee (amount depending on whether vehicle is supplied by you or us), a few drinks and a bit of grub, plus, obviously, all fuel covered, free gig entry and real gratitude from us lot. if you are a driver (or know of one) who'd be up for it but does not have an estate car (or van/whatever) then we could either hire one or, as long as you are over 25, use a converted ambulance belonging to another group in brum, but these would cost a bit so your 'wage' would decrease somewhat. anyway, we need to sort this ideally tonight or very first thing tomorrow so please respond asap if you reckon you might be a goer. send a 'phone number and someone, probably robert, will call you pretty damned quick. no worries if you can't or don't wanna do it, we won't stop loving you but a 'yeah' from someone would be just the job. apologies to those abroad, etc, for being on the bum end of a blanket style email, but...well, you know. top regards to y'all the nightingales<< If it had been yesterday, I'd have done it too! Flotation Toy Warning @ the ICA tonight. Anyone else going? AT Keith?? Mark ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #289 *******************************
