No, it's not a nightmare we'd have after a night of dusting off the Dome discography or the collection of drone music, but a reality even more threatening: PURPOSE STIMULATED, the first track on an album that puts our man Lewis beside another master of destabilizing sound, John Duncan. We can't imagine what the two explored during their encounter in Sweden that sent them into this work: better to abandon ourselves to letting the nightmare unfold. The voice, we were saying. For awhile now Duncan has centered on this sonic element with some concentration, as if a still sleeping energy resided there, capable of emitting unexpected forces vital to his art. After being goaded with the children's voices in the rousing installation THE KEENING TOWERS at the Gothenburg Biennial last year, and after having processed other voices in work proceeding this one (including the recent TONGUE with Elliott Sharp) with varying results, Duncan hits the target in this record thanks to the dialogue with Graham Lewis, who provides experience and elegance in sonic manipulation equal to his interlocutor and -- obviously -- an inimitable voice. Together, the two remix and manipulate shortwave, filters and field recordings to give form to four tracks woven together by a submerged pulse, never made heavy by useless reiterations or static moments. CYCLE is an unending avalanche, in STEP the voice is again 'visible' although whispering and laid over recordings of steps, tolling that accentuates the path toward the End. 'All presence amplified', Lewis recites in the first track, but it's in the second that the two are so very good at amplifying a 'sound-presence' that in the past has often accompanied Duncan's 'phantom broadcast' where the darkness is remixed in Lewis' experiments. FALL is the heart of the album, lasting half an hour, a voice that's slightly modulated and split into infinity. An orchestra of ghosts dance in the mind, a line of sound insidiously vaulting and lapping, becoming intertwined in the end. Toward the middle the sound seems to crouch, lose its majesty and examine its own roots, immersed in a threadlike panting on which the track unravels. Great masters of sonic modulation, Duncan and Lewis have created a seductive, profound work that never gives in to temptations of monotony. A must-have experience. However, they do rather seem to let themselves down in the software/interface bits of their products. For example, both of my VHS vids are Sonys, and I can't fault their actual performance as video recorders, but the programming 'interface' (such as it is) seems not very well thought out: the heirarchical structure of the on-screen menus , meaning that to access fairly simple, often-used things you have to wade through 2 or 3 screens rather than going straight for the feature in question seems clumsy and clunky. Having said that, I am astonishingly loyal:- Every Hi-Fi cassette deck I've ever had has been a Sony, every walkman, every CD player, and my current TV is an old Trinitron, (ancient in electronic terms, but still going strong). Performance is exemplary, but sometimes the little things suck. And don't get me started on the cost of their spare parts:- even a comparitively simple, easy-to-repair fault can be so expensive to fix with the cost of Sony's 'custom' parts, including many of the IC's for simple functions, it seems often cheaper to throw it in the bin and buy a new one. Other than that.........:-( Yahoo! I got the Liverpool Unearthed vol 2 cd recently for the live Teardrops track Camera Camera. Well there's a track called Astral Girl by The White Capsule. First time I heard it I checked the tracklisting cos I thought it was the Wild Swans. When it wasn't I thought it must be a copyist. Next time I played it, I thought the same and thought no, that is definitely Paul Simpson. Checked the sleevenotes and sure enough...It's him!! He plays k/b, bass and sings on it - The Room's Paul Cavanagh is on gtr. From 1994, the notes say... "More symphonic pop from the house of PS. A giant, spacious piece that bridges the period btwn the WS and Skyray. A sure fire hit in any language. Definitely one that got away." It sure is. It's great! And the desc is spot on. It sounds like Skyray (in fact I reckon he's used the bass riff in Skyray!), with vocals. There's also a demo of Naive, one of my fave songs by The Room. The one that sounds a bit 'loungey' with added tension. The track by the infamous Sex Gods (De Freitas, Andy Eastwood, Mike Mooney, etc) is pretty good, too. Wilco was here in Nashville on Wednesday. Definitely the least interesting of the five shows of theirs I've seen -- Tweedy going showy instead of being his usual laconic, sly self; setlist stuck in Midtempoland; busy arrangements played precisely and professionally instead of being on the verge of spiralling out of control like many a "Misunderstood" crescendo (a tune that wasn't in the set Wednesday night).
