Yeah, it seems that 'power pop' has different connotations on the other side of the Atlantic. I just think of bands like The Pleasers that had a lot of media attention for a few weeks one summer and who were rarely heard of again. The Only Ones, for example, certainly were'nt considered power pop over here. > >The Only Ones were a bit of an oddity (an oddity I like, but nontheless an oddity) > > /////i loved them then but i think they've dated badly ; too much production , too much axewank , too derivative of perrett's heroes. the peel session album is much better but i find something like "serpents shine" almost impossible to listen to now as it tries so hard to be a commercial rock album. I'm a big fan of The Only Ones, but I never liked Serpents production even at the time. Dunno about it trying to sound commercial, it just sounded murky to me. The production on their final Baby's Got A Gun is much better - really crisp - but unfortunately - overall - the songs aren't as good. The debut is an absolute classic though!! Havn't played the Rick Kids LP in a long time, but IIRC the production was pretty naff on that, too. Great title track though! I thought Corgan was also a touring "member" of New Order on Moby's Area 1 tour, but I could be misremembering that.
