News from the Raveonettes that may be of interest to VU fans... We had a day in the studio recording with Ms Maureen Tucker from Velvet Underground, and it was an absolute pleasure. It was her birthday, we gave her tulips, she banged a cool velvety drum and came to our show that same evening in Atlanta with her family. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2004 07:42:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Derek White Subject: [idealcopy] Anyone heard or seen " Delays" ?: ( the band, not the FX !) Just wondering if any of you listmembers have encountered a band called "Delays" (not THE Delays, just plain "Delays") . They got a brief-ish mention in a mag I buy ( 'Music Mart' (!) ) that was pretty positive all told:- but it was their alleged points of reference that got my attention:- I haven't got the article in front of me, but from memory the list included The Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Ride, and My Bloody Valentine. With a list of influences like that, I thought some of you may be interested in them, anyhow. Any of you actually heard, or even seen them ? If so, what did you think ? dw Tired of spam? Yahoo! Slightly cleverer than average mainstream indie live (they supported the Pixies at Brixton on the Thursday); distinctly uninspiring on record. Maybe half a rung up from Snow Patrol, and you can read *whatever you like* into that. Incidentally, they used to be known as "Idoru". - - A - -- Dept of Earth Sciences, Univ. Seen 'em twice, first time 18 months ago third on the bill when they came across with immediate star quality in sound and image and again headlining at the Astoria this year. They are potentially one of the great singles bands - at least the equivalent of Ash, who I actually think are a great singles band - with already three fine singles to their name - Long Time Coming, Nearer than Heaven and the sublime Hey Girl, all of which can be found on their debut album Faded Seaside Glamour. Aside from the opening track, nothing else on the album comes close though. In their headlining gig their lack of back-up material was exposed and the time started to drag. But if they can put out two or three poppy, catchy singles a year over the next few years I'd be happy. Rather than the reference points below I'd suggest Teenage Fanclub and the Byrds. There's no use of noise like Ride and MBV (see Amusement Parks on Fire for that), rather a catchy pop sensibility at play. I find them to one of the most sincere and intellectual pop bands around. It still baffles me why they haven't crossed over to Smiths/New Order fans, I'm guessing it is down to poor distribution. Keith, are we going to buy the Mansun 3CD outtakes set when it comes out at the end of the month? I can't wait! Even though it feels like nostalgia already.... I haven't been posting much lately, but I have been keeping up with all the chat. I have noticed all my local stores (even the Virgin Megastore) have stocked multiple copies of BC Gilbert's "Ordier". It sure sticks out like a sore thumb with the wooden packaging! ~Michael - ---------------------------------------------------- It was Michael (Rain) who was singing their praises. They're very early 80's sounding - Working Class Jacket for example sounds like The Wild Swans - the vocals are *very* Paul Simpson - but with that A Town Called Malice beat. With Dolly Mixture on backing vocals. And it namedrops The Smiths! You might notice all those reference points are British. Does that help? Keith - ---------------------------------------------------- Hey people I recall a while ago somebody talking about the band My Favourite and singing heir praises. I can't remember who was discussing it unfortunately, but I've just been offered to do a single with them on my label and wanted to gauge what reaction their first UK release might get? Any thoughts anybody?
