He told me a great story of when Gryphon shared a studio with Wire. Wire invited him in to sing the backing vocals on "Mannequin". Trouble was he was completely pissed! His backing vocals were recorded flat on his back with the mike suspended above his head! so next time you hear Dave Oberle's melodic harmonies on Mannequin, keep that thought in your head..... Gryphon had quite a history. They appeared on Magpie, played 2 weeks at the Victoria and Albert Museum, played a gig at Wandsworth prison, and in the early 70's became the first (and maybe only) act to appear on Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the same week!" Also, when I see SO many exclamation marks, I hope fervently that the person typing them doesn't have ready access to sharp implements. As for off-Wire topics, yeah well we all do that, don't we, and I'm one of the worst offenders. However, I find it re-assuring that we're NOT monomaniacal obsessives. Like, how many times can we dissect 'Send' ? The question I posed re a reveiw of the Rockpalast DVD *was* a genuine, interested enquiry, but an ulterior motive *was* a thinly veiled attempt to steer a thread back to topic. Or here's another genuine attempt:- presumably, at some point in the near future, work will commence, or may even have already begun on Read and Burn 3. I'd be very interested to hear what other listmembers would like to see the band do on this next release ? What kind of direction would people like to see taken ? For my own part, I'd *really* like to see some work recorded that wasn't done in the "cut'n'paste" flat-pack self assemble kit form. I understand that the last time the band recorded all together in the studio was for '154', and I believe that it's no accident that the most highly regarded of Wire's albums ie the first 3 were ALL recorded in this manner. It's, well, /fun/. I have it, and the few times I spun it myself I found it okay but not up to the hype. But when I heard it in bits and pieces in shuffled with five or six other discs at some friends' house a few days ago, I thought it sounded great and realized that the tunes had sunk in with me more than I'd thought. It was Michael (Rain) who was singing their praises. I like what I've heard by them, but then I like frothy-ish pop. They're very early 80's sounding - Working Class Jacket for example sounds like The Wild Swans - the vocals are *very* Paul Simpson - but with that A Town Called Malice beat. With Dolly Mixture on backing vocals. And it namedrops The Smiths! You might notice all those reference points are British. Does that help? Don't have a problem with The Streets although not my bag, there is some true originality there,...and I feel he should have won on that basis. I do wonder whether the genuine Chavs (or scallies, or casuals as they used to be called) actually like The Streets.....or whether its just students and middle class 30 something Q Readers. I've never quite seen the point of the mercury prize. If you look at this list though, its all very 'tasteful' and safe major label sponsored stuff. With the exception of Mr Wyatt, its stuff you can get in Tescos and on free-CDs attached to your sunday paper. It does nothing to promote new music or true innovation. Ah well at least Snow Patrol did't win.... ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #265 *******************************
