I've always loved the singles I do seem to recall that it *was* by and large ignored at the time, and so too was another magnum opus of theirs , too.... (celluloid Heroes, perhaps? I dunno:- I ignored it ;-) ) Going off at something of a tangent here, but related in a roundabout way to the posting about the Kinks' VGPS, *Someone* on-list said the other week that the sounds of The Kinks and [similar bands:-perhaps it was The Move] gave a more accurate idea of what the 60's were about musically in the UK, rather than the whole 'flower power/ "Californ-aye-aayy" thing, to which there was a measure of agreement:- to get my two pennyworth in here, in 1967, whilst I was a mere pup of 11, for various reasons I probably listened to more radio that year (mainly the Pirate Radio Caroline 1, 18 miles across the Irish Sea from me ) than I have ever done before, or since, and I can confirm that my main musical memories of that year were........ 1) Waterloo Sunset:- The finest romanticisation of Londinium The Kinks ever did, 2) Arnold Layne / See Emily Play:- Syd's Pink Floyd 3) It's my life:- The Animals 4) I can hear the grass grow :- The Move (Also 'Flowers in the rain', IIRC), 5) My friend Jack eats Sugar lumps :- The Smoke ( I remember this 'cos it was the first record I can recall getting pulled from playlists when someone pointed out *what* it was about.........which of course at the time made me *still* none the wiser) and finally 6) Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever : - The Beatles (really?? ;-) ) OF these, "Waterloo Sunset" and "Arnold Layne" are by far and away to me personally the songs that spring to mind when anybody mentions 1967....... There was other stuff getting heavy rotation on Rad C., but these I remember vividly. (I was always cheesed off with the way that the Floyd's "Emily..." got cut halfway through the middle-8 wig out). There was a goodly wodge of Beach Boys stuff getting played, too alongside more 'trad' UK pop like Billy J Kramer & the Dakotas, Georgie Fame etc, and the last croaks of the MOR 'Ballad' singers like E. Humperdink et al being played too, but rarely on the pirates. I s'pose what I'm trying to say here is that there was precious little impact of US West Coast stuff on the UK charts, if you ignore the Byrds and Mamas & Papas on the UK charts, beyond isolated 'hits' like the Lovin' Spoonfuls' "Daydream", and that in the 'Summer of Love' [stop snickering up there at the back] it was *largely* business as usual in the charts. I didn't even particularly notice Hendrix, Cream et al until late 68/ '69. That's my mental snapshot of '67...............FWIW. Tired of spam? Yahoo! Nah - I'm okay. Just spent too much time Bumbershooting yesterday. That's the big Seattle Labor Day weekend arts festival, don'tcha know. It was cool - I got to see Nick Lowe play a solo acoustic set, and hear parts of a set by Critters Buggin. But - most importantly - I got to see the Pixies. What a show! They played quite a set - 29 songs in all. 9:30 until about 11:00 PM. Everything you'd want to hear, plus a few b-sides. Great show. Oh yeah - in Wire related news - I got the DVD/CD Saturday. That had to set some kind of speed record for delivery. Kudos to PostEverything - they rock mightily! Somebody asked earlier about the CD. It is the audio portion of the DVD, minus the interview, and has individual tracks. It also appears to be in mono, like the show.
