I've always loved the singles - I'm not sure who actually bought it, but we had Dedicated Follower of Fashion in the house when I was a kid. But VGPS is an album I'd been meaning to buy for a while - one of my mates thinks it's the greatest album ever! - and I'm not disappointed. Admittedly, releasing it a 3cd set with mono and stereo mixes may be over-egging the pudding as they say, but there's no complaints here. I have to plead ignorance and admit that I didn't know they had a song called Johnny Thunder either. It's not an album I know at all but the reviews of the 3-CD set have been so glowing it's piqued my interest, as a passing Kinks fan (i.e. the singles, mostly). Never quite 'got' the Kinks before but this is a cracking record (no hits on it....and seemingly ignored at the time), the folllow up 'Arthur...' being re-issued next which i'm looking forward to hearing. They were kind of the 4th best band of their era (its the Inspiral Carpets syndrome!) and I've overlooked them till now. This has an eerie feel to it which I really like....I feel this perhaps is more evocative of what the "Swinging 60s" were really like for yer average suburban guy or gal...a world away from Rikishesh and Californ-aye-ay. As well as having the masks and heart monitors, which have become somewhat overegged. I have the new album but only played it once to date - on that basis an improvement on Walking with Thee which I found a step down from Internal Wrangler. But it's really the first collection of eps you want - tracks like Evil Bill, Porno, D.P. and Monkey on Your Back are tremendous. And 'IPC Subeditors Dictate our Youth' is a track title up there with 'Jah Light Shine in a Natty Hornchurch' in my book. Another the Keith [Strangely, Mark's reference to What is Oil's track is the second mention to Hornchurch - an unprepossessing Essex town for the uninitiated - I've come across today. Totally agree on Walking With Thee - very good indeed! The other 3 suck (whining singing) - like a totally different band. Er... masks?
