It truly is superb!! - --- I like it a lot, too, although the band is in real danger of both becoming a one-trick-pony and rapidly vanishing up its own arse. () has some great tracks, but lacks the range of Agftis Byrjun, and it was sad to see their surreal lyrics reduced to something like four noises (all the "vocals" on () are composed of a very few sounds). Here's hoping their next release is a bit more adventurous. On that line, I finally got hold of a copy of the band's debut, Von, thanks to my Icelandic in-laws. Although there are some very beautiful, typically Sigur Rss moments on the album (such as the jangly, Seefeelesque Myrkur and the introspective Von), half the album is extreme and industrial - akin to Einstuerzende Neubauten's nosier moments. And there was me always thinking the remix album (Von Brigpi) was likely an extreme take on the band's debut, when in fact the reality was the opposite! By the way, fans of Icelandic music and intelligent electronic stuff could do worse than check out Worm is Green's excellent Automagic album. Those details in full: 1 Try Me Out - KaitO 2 Do I Look Like a Slut? - Avenue D 3 I Woke Up Hooked: The Clouds and Rainbow Theory - The Brians 4 June - Life Without Buildings 5 Be Kind + Remind (The Brown Angel Mix) - Rogue Wave Hmm can't say I'm familiar with the rest but I'm sure some of you are. Elsewhere in the mag, some mouthwatering reviews for upcoming albums. The new Blue Nile is described as closer to 'Hats' than 'Peace at Last' which is fine by me. The Fiery Furnaces album, Blueberry Boat, gets a rave, described as 'one of the most spectacular musical creations of modern times'. And Bjork's Medulla includes a duet with Robert Wyatt and is called 'one of the strangest and most uncompromising [records] by a major artist to get a major release'. It sounds like her 'Tilt'. And she's just been in the Olympic opening ceremony, warbling in her own way in front of an audience of zillions. Now admittedly few Greek songsters spring to mind (although Nana Mouskouri must be an embittered woman tonight) but this was an impressively risky choice, akin to Barcleona's use of Catalonian experimentalists La Furas dels Baus in 92. Somehow I can't see London using someone this radical if we get the 2012 nod. We'd probably have Status Quo doing 'Rocking all Over the World' although I'd put in early bids for Kate Bush doing 'Running Up That Hill' or Belle and Sebastian doing 'The Stars of Track and Field'. It sounds like her 'Tilt'. Looking forward to this. All voices - no instruments apart from percussion apparently. > We'd probably have Status Quo doing 'Rocking all Over the World' > although I'd put in early bids for Kate Bush doing 'Running Up That > Hill' or Belle and Sebastian doing 'The Stars of Track and Field'. What was it that had Spandau Ballet's Gold playing all the time. Olympics or commonwealth games or summat? Olympics or commonwealth games or summat?<< I personally witnessed the opening ceremony of Euro 96, with "anthem" caterwauled by Mick Bastard Hucknall out of Simply Red. No wonder we couldn't beat Switzerland that day.
