I loved his 'In Ribbons'. A forgotten Classic I think. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 00:56:30 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] guilty pleasures Having attended the Northamptonshire v Worcestershire 20-20 match at Luton a few weeks back I can vouch for the occasional blast of Howzat, in between Robbie Williams' Let me Entertain You and occasional bits of Queen. I have to say that it was a farcical occasion, more badly organised than most church fetes I've attended. The tannoy announcer was utterly inept, missing a lot of the action and sounding completely uninterested. From where I sat there was only a very basic scoreboard visible and there were only paltry attempts to inform the crowd of how many runs were needed or to gee them up into a modicum of excitement. Hick scored a century but I only found out from reading the Guardian the following day that this was a record score for the 20-20 game - surely something worth mentioning. As we left the ground Hick was being interviewed with a mike that didn't work which set the seal on the day. If this is the future of cricket I despair. Roll on the test match at the Oval next week (I have a ticket for the Friday) where the ancient traditions of Mexican Waves, very pissed people dressed up as animals and streakers will surely prevail. Howzat (or rather a 10-second snatch of it) is enjoying a predictable renaissance thanks to the arrival of 20-20 Cricket ( a new, shortened and showbizzed version of the game) where it is played whenever a wicket falls.
