Adge was that rarity - a comic song writer with a genuine wit. Their classic, 'Drink Up Thy Zider', can be heard to this day at Somerset cricket matches where it is often a command as much as a chant. And the B Side 'Twice Daily' is a great Cider with Rosie-type tale of young frolics. Excellent examples of scrumpy 'n western. I have a live album from the Royal Oak, Nailsea, jam-packed with classics like 'When the Common Market Comes to Stanton Drew' and 'Pill, Pill I love thee Still' (Pill being a village in Somerset). Adge sadly died in a car crash in 1974 - and like JFK I vividly remember the circumstances I heard (it was on the front page of the Western Daily Press that I was delivering as part of my paper-round). No-one else in the band had anything like the same talent and they descended into the joke band we know today. Wow, that was therapeutic! Another the Keith [and while I'm here and way off-topic, let me put in a shout for 'Before Sunset' which is a film still reverberating around my brain two days after I saw it. A remarkably acted and written piece of work - although under 90 minutes, virtually every word and gesture are impregnated with meaning. It helps from the emotional pov to have seen Before Sunrise beforehand - somebody has boobed with the lack of DVD release in the UK at least - but I haven't seen it since it was released nine years ago so don't be put off if you haven't seen it lately. Like a cross between Eric Rohmer and Brief encounter it's the film of the year so far for me. And so much better than 'Lost in Translation'. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Keith Astbury Sent: 26 July 2004 18:53 To: Monochromatic Man Cc: idealcopy@smoe.org Subject: Re: [idealcopy] WAY OT: Wurzels > What's up with these guys? Not heard about this one, though there's been a couple of other compilations of relatively unknown glam acts in the last year. Not heard either, but there's Velvet Tinmine (rpm) and Litter from the Glitter Bin (sanctuary) unless this is one of them under a different name. > 03. Aggravation Place - The Jook Got the Jook Bomp ep that is dated 1978, but is much earlier. Jook - like Jet - have strong Bolan and Sparks connections, as they featured Ian Hampton and Trevor White (T. White) from Sparks on bass and gtr respectively, and Chris Townson of Johns Children on drums. To continue the Johns Children connection, JC bassist John Hewlett co-produced it. (Hewlett also managed Sparks) > 04. Nothing to Do With Us - Jet According to http://www.artistdirect.com/music/artist/bio/0,,449296,00.html?artist=Jet Jet were 'the first supergroup of glam'!! Jet were Johns Children singer Andy Ellison and ex-Sparks bassist Martin Gordon in their pre Radio Stars band - According to http://www.geocities.com/martinjjgordon/rstadium.html Martin had left Sparks after their first made-in-the UK LP, Kimono My House ("I thought Sparks would be a band but when I called the Mael brothers to tell them about all these neat songs I'd written, they said, 'Er, we don't think we'll be needing them')". They also featured pianist Peter Oxendale (again ex Sparks) and Ian MacLeod (also later Radio Stars) on gtr, who replaced the 'erratic' Davey O'List (ex-Nice). The following album came out a few yrs back. JET - NOTHING TO DO WITH US/A GOLDEN TREASURY OF JET (FAN MAIL STEMRA CO 8018 DBL 2000) (INC. EPONYMOUS 1975 CBS LP - "HELD IN HIGH REGARD BY GLAM AFICIONADOS FOR YEARS, BETRAY THE SPARKS INFLUENCE. BONUS DISC OF DEMOS INC. DESDEMONA, YOU SCARE ME TO DEATH (AKA Horrible Breath), JOHNNY MEKON" ACCORDING TO RECORD COLLECTOR. 9/00) Incidentally, when Gordon left Sparks after Kimono, he was replaced by Hampton of Jook. Just to add to the confusion btwn Jook and Jet, according to http://www.artistdirect.com/music/artist/bio/0,,449296,00.html?artist=Jet above, Ellison, Gordon, MacLeod, and Townson later recruited former Jook/Sparks guitarist Trevor White to the band -- Gordon and Townson alone also joined White on his 1976 "Crazy Kids" solo single. White also assumed production duties for a set of Jet demos requested by Island Records; the group recorded four songs which included a version of Radio Stars classic Dirty Pictures. > 06. Sooner or Later - Flintlock Kids tv stars. The drummer was also in kids telly heroes The Tomorrow People! > 07. Crazy Kids - Trevor White T White as above, with Gordon & Townson. > 15. Pogo Dancing - Chris Spedding & The Vibrators Spedding was famous UK guitarist, who had hit with Motorbikin' and played with Bryan Ferry circa Lets Stick Together. Was rumoured for yrs to have played on the Pistols records. Vibrators are the punk act of the same name. > 19. City of Fun - England's Glory Pre-Only Ones Peter Perrett.
