(except perhaps the Cure 'Live @ Orange' vid which they showed the greater part of around 10 yrs back, & so far as I know that was mixed in part at least by the band themselves). Morrisey's was a decent performance, too. Strange. Although I wasn't exactly a huge Smith's fan, and a lot of his solo stuff I've heard is less than vital, I find myself warming to this new self-deprecating version of Moz. Only kidding. Made it up ; ) Seriously, it's called High and is on Sanctuary records in the UK - what the Observer reviewer (Barney Hoskins) calls the 'graveyard of 80's pop greats'. He doesn't give it that a great review overall - worryingly the names Mike and the Mechanics and Randy Newman are mentioned and he says one track, I Would Never, is 'categorically the worst BN sing ever: 40something wallpaper rock with no distinguishing Nile-marks of any kind. Skip it.' Dunno about you, but I often find BN stuff 'wallpapery' on early listens anyway. Still, for all that he still awards it 4 out of 5 stars. Of course, regardless of all that I will be buying it. Not heard much of them beyond the odd clip on TV. I don't want to diss the NY Dolls as I understand they had a real impact at the time and appreciate their importance in the development of Punk and what came after, but not knowing their stuff it was difficult for me to grasp why on hearing their stuff cold. I just saw a band playing what to my ears was very, very straight Rock & Roll with guitar solos and, to be harsh, some really bleeding obvious Keef and Jagger Riffs n' Poses. Could have been watching an Aerosmith tribute band for all I knew. I was baffled....Whatever it was that they had back then for people that was so revolutionary, that made David change his surname to Sylvian didn't come through. Unlike say The Ramones, Television or VU whose records still sound amazing today...I feel you need to hear them very much in the context of their time to "get" the Dolls. Is that unfair?
