I borrowed They Were Wrong So We Drowned from the library(! - there's obviously someone with a semblance of musical taste there, although it's not often followed through in the rest of the stuff they have) and I have grown to like it a good deal. A Birthday Party-esque mess shot through with humour. It's not much like the first album mind. For those of us outside of London it was the first hint that real change was coming Dunno who this backs up, but..... Somewhere in the bowels of my tape collection, I've a recording of a John Peel program from late May/Early June of 1976. Listening to it is rather instructive in a sense. If I were to tell you that the program included IIRC such as Poco and other 'soft-rock' staples, a session from one-man-troubador Micheal Chapman (for those of you not familiar with *his* output, think "U.K. J.J.Cale and wince ):- there's not a hint of the mountains of dub reggae that became a Peel trademark as much as punk was, and the *only* remotely 'new-wavish' thing in evidence was the Radio Stars single "Dirty Pictures", which contained the immortal couplet "I get my thrills up in the attic/ With a Kodak Instamatic". Even John's voice is different:- he sounds either like the torpid music had got to him, or the lad had eaten a Mandrax sandwich. Either way, it *is* a depressing snapshot of '76. If this is what the most ....er....contemporary DJ on Radio one was reduced to playing, just imagine what daytime R1 was like.............. Rooted and spread.<< Mark said: Having listened to it pretty regularly for a quarter of a century (yikes!), it has achieved a kind of timelessness that is reserved for truly great pieces of work. Not sure it was in step with any context at the time, other than the act of doing what was not expected... ((( Apologies for picking up this thread a bit late, but I just got back from my holidays, and am doing a bit of catching up... Just to clarify: when I mentioned contextual factors, I didn't just mean music, but the wider social/political/cultural/technological climate of the time (along with personal factors), which I think, timeless though the best music (like 154) is/remains, inevitably colours our immediate reception/ensuing memory. It's impossible to disentangle it all. I was a pretty impressionable 15 year old at the time. Meanwhile, it's great news about the Rockpalast show on DVD, as it's a great set, for those of you who haven't seen the poor quality video or CD-ROM, the performance is really tight. Graham very fetching in bouffant hair and leather kecks (great version of Touching Display), Colin supersmart in white shirt/black tie, Bruce right at the back nonchalantly chewing his gum, and Robert eventually dispensing with his T-shirt. And a half hour interview aswell... they have us spoilt. Also... news from the front is that the John Duncan/Graham Lewis album Presence will be out in the autumn, hopefully September, on John's All Questions label. Better get crackin' on me review then.. They slow it right down (of course), and add a soaraway melody to the vocals but retain a distinctly Wire-y guitar thrum. Box set is v.good value as well, 3 CDs of hard to find stuff/outtakes etc. plus a double-sided DVD with documentary films on one side, and promos/live stuff on the other, all for #18. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #211 *******************************
