For the uninitiated he basically tells short stories or describes scenarios to a country and western tinged hip-hop backing in an assumed husky cowboy voice which makes him sound much older. He actually sounds remarkably like Kermit the Frog according to my daughter who's met him a few times. ((( They're playing Dublin next tuesday. I'm pretty excited, as I've never seen nor heard them, but only read good things about them. I like the fact that they were inspired to get back together after seeing Wire on the 02 US tour. I think I'm in for a treat. Also Television had at least five new songs last week - - expect an album next by 2006, to keep up the 14-year gap strike rate. (actually the 1992 comeback album was pretty good and is proving to be very durable...) ((( They played here last friday, and were great, really solid. A more intimate venue than previously, which really suited them, I was about two foot from Verlaine. I liked the new numbers a lot. Got some very nice photos too. Richard Lloyd's a great one for the pained expressions during solos. Fergus __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I tried to illustrate the apocalytic views of the German journalist with a oh so optimistic view from Blixa out of Die genaue Zeit (The right time) from the album Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. (Drawings of Patients OT) Alles wird Muzak. Alle werden gleich. Wie spaet mag es sein? It means: Everything becomes muzak. Everyone will be the same. Chris NP Zero 7 - I have seen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 21:21:39 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: [idealcopy] OT: Old Farts at Play Eschewing the usual 'four bands for three quid' ethos for a while I seem to be in the middle of an unplanned set of gigs involving more mature artists - Sparks and Blondie already done and the Patti Smith Group and Television to come on Saturday. So it was only natural to pop along to see The Magic Band last night at the Garage. I'd missed their reunion last year but raves (including here - Mark I think) persuaded me I should have gone. First up, the audience. This is encouragingly the oldest audience I've ever seen at a stand-up gig. One bloke even has a walking stick which may point the way for my gig-going experience in about 15 years time. On first are five people sitting down who turn out to be the Alabama 3 minus 1 (allegedly MIA at Glasto) under the guise of the Larry Love Show Band. They only play for half an hour but make a hell of an impression. The singer is the most stoned person I've seen on stage since (probably) Roy Harper in 78 but very funny with it. He's got a hell of a band too - - a great pairing of fiddler and mouthharpist, both with extensive unkempt hair and a guitarist who can pick out those swampy blues notes. They do 'Woke up this Morning' alongside some old standards ('Nobody's Fault but Mine') and make you feel better for being there. Excellent. A short break and then 15 minutes earlier than scheduled some old blokes dressed in that old-rock-star clothing (hats / patterned shirts / shades) take to the stage. John 'Drumbo' French on vocals (and later drums). Rockette Morton on bass, Gary 'Mantis' Lewis and Denny 'Feelers Rebo' Walley on guitars and a stand-in drummer. I'd heard that John 'Drumbo' French could carry off an impersonation of the Captain but nothing prepared me for this verbal ventriloquism - close your eyes and it could be him. And the noise is extraordinary - that maelstrom of sound, dissonant yet perfectly balanced. The set ranges across the full era and the highlights are many - Floppy Boot Stomp, Electricity, Hair Pie, Alice in Blunderland, a great impromptu Orange Claw Hammer while a bass string was changed. Dear God. As the gig goes on I feel like I'm in the presence of something I'd no right to be in - a fully functioning band who had no right to exist. The ultimate tribute band. My feelings towards Rockette Morton - a man who looks like any number of ageing Science Fiction writers - are like what some people must feel about the Queen - reverent, humbled, moved by the sheer fact that I'm in his presence. At the end the double whammy of Moonlight on Vermont and Big Eyed Beans from Venus nearly does me in. The band goes off shaking the hands of the people at the front. This is a great band at the peak of their powers. Bloody magnificent. Fanboy another the Keith ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V7 #194 *******************************
