Does anyone know of any others? > Hi - I think it may be a one-off. This gig was originally advertised as a Rocket From the Tombs (the pre-Ubu band that have recently been touring the US) gig. They always said it might collapse at any minute and sadly it looks like it has. I assume substituting Ubu was a compromise. Perhaps other things will emerge between now and then but Thomas played near me a couple of weeks back and from what I overheard at the end of the gig (when he did his customary "come and buy my cds" at the foot of the stage) there's nothing else planned so far. Incidentally, Thomas and Two Pale Boys play the Spitz in London on July 10. I do take your point about Kerry though: he does seem a bit of an empty suit, with, as you rightly point out, as much charisma as a small lump of putty. His utterances so far seem to be summed up as "We can be every bit as gung-ho right-wing as they [the Republicans] are, but we're nicer folks and will look after the old better" D'ya reckon that's accurate? Seems like the best hope is for Ralph Nader to drop out and leave Kerry a clear run. Bill Clinton he ain't............:-( Derek That would be an accurate surmisation,he is WAY too quiet, not 'pushing' his image at all,and yes,'twas Ralph that helped defeat Gore by 'stealing' enough votes in marginal states to get george in............even though, overall, more people actualy voted for Al than for g,so much for 'democracy'. I think there's an even stronger chance he'll do it again this year as,unlike last year,he actualy has a political party backing him.Ari New and Improved Yahoo! They obviously put a bit of thought into - they later sent some alternative suggestions apparently. Althought there's some stuff I like a lot - The Slits, GO4, there's also some interesting stuff I hadn't heard before - The Wipers who I didn't know but reminded me very much of Chair's Missing era Wire, and - I'm ashamed to say - I'd not heard Harmonia before, even though I've been a big Neu fan for twenty odd years. Really impressed. I wasn't familiar with the James Brown track either, and it's a bit of a corker. But anyway, who are The Wipers, and is this likeness to our lads typical? Coincidentally, the Slits also appeared on last weeks Moz compiled NME CD. Nice to see them getting some attention again. I don't know why I don't like them...they write decent enough pop-rock songs but there something about them that doesn't compute. I think its the combination if show-offy goodtime slap-bass vibe that permeates their stuff.....and the fact they look like a bunch of toothless, tatooed Builders on a permanent stag-night in LA.... Oh i've probably just dissed someones favourite band again.... N.P. I still don't think there is any justification for using 'Girl' as a term of abuse, even as part of 'Football Banter'. Derek has not convinced me. And frankly, anyone who cites the fact that "his previous girlfriends" will testify to the fact that he is not a sexist pig...thats up there with "I'm not a racist a lot of my friends are black".... This bit speaks for itself: "I speak as someone who, as a result of a similar argument to this watched the lamentable spectacle of a team of women footballers play against a team of men. The 'pub disagreement' was turned into a charity event, but it was as tedious as it was predictable, and I left when the score was 16-! 0 about ten minutes into the second half." Does this mean that its OK to call someone who we don't think is good at football a "Girl"? As for the rest of it, I have never been accused of being "Ultra PC" before! I'm not (hence many unfortunate clashes with Graeme Rowland). I'm certainly nothing to do with SWP brigade and would rather be a Killing Joke Roadie than be associated with that bunch of pillocks. *I* decide my own politics....which I didn't think were particularly radical.
