(not something i'm usually known for)...surely we are above using 'girl' as a term of abuse in the 21st Century, especially on this forum? Well, I'd have to say you *have* strayed into being 'overly P.C.' here. I don't think anyone who knew me would say that I'm a sexist, nor is 'girl' a term of abuse that I *normally* employ, however, let's have some context here: a) We *are* discussing a football game 'twixt two teams of , to the best of my knowledge, men. Hargreaves plays with as much physical commitment to the cause as a 9-year old schoolgirl, IMHO:- in fact, I could probably find you some of said schoolgirls round here that'd show him a thing or two about how to tackle. and b) (and this *is* pertinent) I called him a girl, **having watched the Alistair McGowan/Ronnie Ancona show that Mark B alludes to**, and I thought it might amuse those who had similarly seen it. I 've seen unmistakeable signs of active senses of humour hereabouts, and clearly didn't expect such a (if I may put it like this) po-faced response. One thing I don't get, though is why "especially on this forum" we should be any more or less P.C. than society at large......? I Can't say that Wire strike me as a band who wear politics on their sleeve, and thus the mechanism by which they would attract a listenership of a particularly "PC" leaning isn't overly clear to me...... Sheesh Tim:- lighten up, and save the ammunition for the fascist t***s that warrant it. ;-) As for why there ain't more female listmembers, I don't know why that is so? I have no current info to suggest that more or less women are computer-owning & compu-literate:- I suspect they outnumber their male counterparts- therefore, why they aren't here is something I don't know. I don't *see* any out-of-order stuff on here, guaranteed to offend, nor do I think we get all 'boysie' at the drop of a hat, so, as I said, I dunno *why* they aren't here. I do know It ain't for the lack of a welcome mat:- IIRC I was one of several people here who posted messages of 'Welcome' to two of the more recent female list-joiners........... One GUESS is that IMHO, (and at the risk of inviting another tirade) women are more literal in that they probably expect a Wire list to be somewhat more focussed on-topic, and drift away when the s/n ratio drops to a certain level, but that is *just* a guess. I'm as guilty as anyone, but hey, I like discussing all manner of stuff with lively, varied & interesting people. To paraphrase the 'Welcome to Idealcopy' message that someone (probably Miles) wrote, that I received upon first subscribing, ' It'd get a tad tedious if all we ever talked about was Newman / Lewis/ Gilbert/ Grey', but perhaps we *do* wander overmuch, and the female people I know usually like things to 'mean what they say', and be 'as advertised'....... I know, why doesn't someone ask one of the missing women ex-listees via e-mail? :-) What do y'all think? [ Now, I s'pose I should clear space in my inbox for the 'incoming' proclaiming me *the* biggest sexist pig known to mankind...... ;-) ] Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. Gosh what a clever guy *he* is...no way is he "sexist or anything". I love the way he can still wear that t-shirt in an "ironic" way! Gosh how very "Post-Loaded-Post-Baddiel&Skinner" And chicks love all that don't they? > This is part of an ad promotion for Yorkie bars. There are some amusing > TV variants of this - the referee ordering a throw-in to be retaken in a > women's football match after repeated 'girly' throws etc. Ho Ho! Sounds hilarious! And its OK because its a Yorkie Advert so that means its *not* sexist or offensive. Its advertising chocolate..and women love that don't they? And kittens! And knitting! > > >>Oh & Hargreaves is a girl.<< > > In the recent Alistair McGowan/Ronni Ancona 'Sven & Nancy' show one of > the sub-lots is that Hargreaves is in fact a woman. Tee Hee. Hope he does another hour long show about Posh n Becks being Thick...endless comedy mileage out of that one and it never gets boring does it?. Ho Ho. What a comic genius he is. And Derek you're right, I now realise it is OK to use 'Girl' as a term of abuse because its all about football and its a MANS game after all. Of course you are *not* a sexist pig, and you're so sure about that you wrote a short essay to explain why you aren't one so thats cleared that up. I tell you what as well everyone, I'm so glad this list exists as where else would I be able to find comment about Euro2004? Here in the UK, No one seems to be talking about it in the newspapers, TV or Radio so really, this list is the only place I can access information about that. So folks, I owe it to you to keep me informed about this underground, obscure sport! More Football chat on this list please! Keep it coming!
