I don't know if aventuremail is planning to do any of the things gmail is doing, but I don't see a connection between the two. 2) Ari: Google won't have any trouble processing everyone's mail even with several thousand people logged in at once; they're a huge company, and very very good at linking computers together to provide quick service. 3) Paul: Yes, Google is definitely displaying "contextual" ads alongside email. This works more or less the same way as the ad links in their web searches do... if you do a Google search for "asteroid" you'll (probably) see an ad for the video game Asteroids along the right-hand side. The system isn't even close to perfect (search for "wire tour" and the top hits are about our boys, but the ad on the side wants to sell you electrical cabling). The important thing about this is that no human being is reading your mail, any more than a person is monitoring what you personally search for. There are privacy advocates who are still uncomfortable with gmail for various reasons, some of which seem sensible to me, but there's also a lot of bizarre rumors flying around that are not true... a ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 08:40:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Derek White Subject: Re: [idealcopy] [OT] Eng <=> Fra & inexplicably silly management decisions........ I certainly wouldn't entertain abdicating my choice in the matter of what CD's to buy, in favour of the whims of some geezer at RT, and if they follow the model as per Brittannia Music Club, and other such 'schemes', then the recommendations will have less to do with what RT regard as 'quality' material, than it is determined by the tottering piles of over-ordered CD's by 5-minute-wonder artistes, that they can scarecly give away. Did any of you see it, if so, what did you think? Or is the silence indicative that y'all think it's best forgotten...........:-P Personally, I thought it was good to see them on the 'box', but as per a lot of other bands, they suffered from a particularly anaemic BBC2 mix, IMHO. The band performed well enough, though, and looked to me as though they were enjoying themselves. For those who didn't see it, they performed two songs, right at the end of the show as a 5-piece:- they did their new single, which was good enough at first listen, but who's name has temporarily left my mental airspace, and a decent rendition of "In between days" to round off with. Just one thing was a bit jarring though:- like, I *know* it's part and parcel of his image, and all that, but I think Robert's makeup is getting to the point where what once made him look waif-like, in an attractive, elegantly wasted way, now is in danger of making him look like a dipsomaniac drag queen who hasn't noticed their cosmetic adventures have run, or have been put on cock-eyed, or worse still, just like one of those sinister ventroloquist's-dummies-come-to-life that you saw in a few 50's horror flicks. Neither look, is what you'd call arresting, at least not in a good way. Is it time to put the lippie & eye-liner away, Robert? Just a thought. It's a darned good job their musics so fine, though, 'cos if continued success relied on 'look' to any extent, they'd be history......... Thought Simon's close-cropped 'mini-Mohawk' was quite fetching, though. And I quite enjoyed Smith's riposte when Ross said his voice was "Wierd":- " WHAT?? *You* are saying *my* voice is wierd???" But who else was going to take it? Owen had just gone off. Lampard perhaps? But I'm not sure anyone else on the team takes penalties. Rooney would probably have done so without being fazed but it's a captainly thing to do given the pressure. I'd also have taken Rooney off because he was a red card waiting to happen. He'd entered that stupid zone whereby he appeals for anything and gets very upset if it doesn't go his way even if he was in the wrong to begin with. Let's take some succour. We neutralised Henry with an inexperienced defence. We led them for 90 minutes. They would be worried if we played them again. If.
