The show was good enough to keep me purchasing more Fall stuff. I missed the latest Fall show in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, however, because I wanted to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with The Rapture at a different venue on the same night. Before The Rapture took stage, a Fall album was playing on the loudspeakers...as if to say that I made the wrong choice. The BRMC/Rapture show was pretty good, though. It was really amateurish sounding, not exactly in a 'intentionally lo-fi' kind of way so much as there really wasn't anything going on. Lots of standing and swaying on stage, a guitar pluck here or there over a loop. I liked them when they, ya know, played. Then we went back upstairs to see some Can work, and KaitO set up. At 12.10am we descended to wait for Wire, annoyingly missing KaitO as Wire didn't come on until after 1am. Strangely the whole band came on at various stages before the gig started to check/prepare equipment before the main entrance - I've never seen any band do this before. Graham was on stage for ages. 99.9 kicked off proceedings, of course. It was rather farcical to see Robert crouched on the floor, looking deathly serious, waving a yellow flashlight about (as did Graham and Bruce) while Colin hurled himself around and strode around the small stage. The point of this exercise was brought home rather better at Glasgow where the stage was big enough to be almost entirely in darkness. The lights there gave the stage an eerie quality, with Colin only occasionally being glimpsed, which built up quite an air of tension. What a difference a venue makes. As I was up against the monitors for the Edinburgh show (memories of '79 came flooding back) I hope to have taken a few half decent photos (though as it's only a little autofocus camera I'm sure that many will be absolutely hopeless). I'll send a CD copy on to the Swim address as an apology for all that flashing, though I'm sure there were better pictures taken! I'll post the rest onto a page for IC-ers to visit. Anyone who wants a Photo-CD can have one, in exchange for a music disc perhaps. Bart/Ari/Keith Astbury will probably find one in their mail eventually! Before the gig started I heard a guy tell someone that he'd driven up that day with a friend from Newbury. Knowing of the Newbury connection (not to mention the fact that I only live about 30 miles away) I butted in - turns out he went to school with Colin and sees the band at every chance he gets. He was going to all three Triptych gigs, which would puts him ahead off us IC-ers (if he managed to go to all three, of course). When I told him I hadn't seen them for 20 years, partly due to shamefully missing the fairly gigs in Bristol/London, he said: "If it makes you feel any better I flew to New York to see them and missed the show!" Sadly I was unable to convince him that he should join our community and didn't get his name. I kept an eye out for him at Glasgow but the wider front-of-stage area didn't help with spotting people. Pretty sure I sure Alistair Tear to the right hand side of the stage at one point but by the time a quieter moment arrived he'd moved. Keith Knight is right about Pink Flag at Edinburgh, there seemed to be all sorts of interesting rhythms going on. I think Graham was really putting his back into it, the sweat was pouring off him. It was less impressive at Glasgow - I think they were getting tired after three nights and four sets (if they really did two at Aberdeen). I'm very glad I went - who knows how long it'll be before they play again in the UK. It will force the hand of the overpaid fops like Viduka*, who'll go, even on reduced terms, rather than have to lug their pampered arses round Gillingham, Crewe and Cardiff. Most of the financial mess of Publicity Pete's regime will have been cleared up by the start of the season, and we have a decent crop of young players to build a team round. It might take a couple of seasons - it might not. Despite big clear-outs of players, both Sunderland & West Ham have made the playoffs. At least we'll have taken the pain - I can see quite a few other premiership clubs "doing a Leeds" if they aren't careful - Newcastle, Spurs, Man City, even Liverpool. We'll be back. We went down in 82 and were champions again by 92. So place your bets on Leeds for the premiership in 2014! Mark * Apart from the last few games, Viduka has played well since January. And he did almost single-handedly get us out of trouble last season. A lazy bastard for sure, but on his day as good as anyone.
